915 lsd

Have just had the factory ZF unit replaced (this is from an '85 Carrera; replaced with an 80-20 unit). It's in good condition and was working without issue when it came out, though it's most likely due for service.

Looking for $1100 + Shipping (or for local buyers, I'm in the San Jose area of CA).

Someone else may be able to answer - I know Porsche used this in 915 and 930 transmissions, as well as some 924 model, though I've not heard of it being used in any 901s before (but I am not very familiar with the 901 other than having driven a few).

No, it will not work. The LSD you are thinking of was used in the mag case 901/911 gearboxes, the 914, and ONLY the 72-73 915. Later 915 LSDs don't work in the early boxes. There's a dimensional difference in addition to the output flange differences.

I am having my non-LSD 915 transmission rebuilt. Can this just be installed OR is there more to getting an LSD in place?

The ring gear will need to be installed on the LSD and then the bearing preload and gear lash will have to be set using shims that go between the bearings on the LSD and the LSD housing. The pinion depth should not need to be reset. It is not overly complicated. Whoever is rebuilding your trans should be able to handle it. It makes a huge difference in how the car launches. Good luck,

Tom

The preload and backlash on the ring gear needs to be set if there was no LSD previously in place, which will probably be a few more hours on to the rebuild.
