WTB 930 calipers for 80 SC
Hi,
Do anyone got some 930 calipers that they don't need? I want to do the 930 brake upgrade for my 1980 SC. They don`t need to be 100% since I need to machine them anyway. Thanks |

F.Y.I. if you don't already have them, you'll need 930 hubs as well to mount the 930 rotors. A less expensive upgrade is to use 944Turbo calipers (same pads as 930) and Carrera rotors.

What does a conversion like this usually cost?

If you're doing front & rear, you'll need 930 rotors & calipers, 930 hubs for the front. You'll either have to machine the rear calipers to fit the SC mounts or have customs mounting tabs welded onto your SC trailing arms and make new brake lines to the rear calipers. I'm probably forgetting some things, too. You're probably looking anywhere between $2500 to $4K depending how much you can do yourself and how much you pay for the parts. It's nice to have but really unnecessary for the street. For street use the 944Turbo front calipers with Carrera rotors are a good and inexpensive upgrade. The only modification is that one of the mounting holes on the caliper needs to be slightly elongated for the bolts to line up with the threaded holes on the SC struts.

Give KTL Kevin a shout. He can help you out with everything you need to know. Thanks Rob. Not sure if the SC has same rotors as Carrera 3.2 but on my 86 the rear 930 rotors fit on no problem, Had to adjust and roll back backing plate edge to accept the 965 calipers and increased diameter. Machined the 965 calipers to the 3 inch spacing 12 mm down from brake opening. On the front I used the floating hat rotors with the 993 tt rotors turned down to the 930 diameter about 8 thou machined off. This gives you the correct offset and then you use the 993 front calipers with the conversion 3.5 inch to 3 inch bracket. It is a bolt on conversion on front. Goodluck. You may need to go with the 930 brake master cylinder. On this conversion you would remove the proportioning valve. Thanks Rob

You don't need 930 hubs to mount the front rotors. 930 hubs help space the rotors further outward to fill the 930 fenders. If you don't have a 930 body, you don't need 930 hubs.
Real Zimmerman 930 floating fronts can be mounted with Rebel Clint's nice hats. brake system components Rebel S Racing Products Or you may also notice you can do it a little more cost effectively by using his 8 hole hats and some other rotors. I have used Wilwood UL, HD or GT 11.75" x 1.25" rotors with great success. Incidentally I have a set of "poor man's" 930 rear calipers if interested. They are not true 930 calipers but function just like them for a lot less cost. These are common 4-piston 964 calipers with 30mm & 28mm sizes that I have modified the mounts and throats to fit the OEM 930 rear rotors. The mount holes have been properly plugged and redrilled 3 in. on-center, 12mm below the pad box just like Rob said (thanks for the recommendation my friend!). The calipers have also been considerably reconditioned. The calipers had some corrosion inside the pad box area that "pinched" the pad guide plates and thereby cinched the brake pads in place making them very difficult to remove. To get them operable again I completely disassembled the calipers to arrested the corrosion in the pad box. Also did: >Re-drilled the mounting holes >Clearanced the interior for 930 rotors >Installed all new M10 and M12 bridge bolts >Four brand new pad guide plates (the old ones had to be sacrificed to get the calipers apart) >New pressure & dust seals >All pistons cleaned up well so they were reused >New crossover fluid transfer tubes (custom made with new copper-nickel tubing, new tube nuts, new high temp protective rubber hose), >All new bleed nipples & rubber caps >Coat of POR15 black velvet high temp paint on the exterior to get them looking decent again. A lot of work to get them back in working order! Probably not profitable but I couldn't bear to just junk them for scrap metal. I will even include some new hard brake lines that connect the caliper to the trailing arm. Here's generally what I do to re-drill them. However in the case of the refurbished "poor man's 930" 964 calipers i've currently got, I had to go a few steps further and split the calipers to get them back in solid shape again. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/246332-993-caliper-mods-grinding-drilling.html
