DE track day. So, I get to the tech line in the pit lane. I pop my front hood and then release the rear deck lid. I need to tell the guy about the mechanical strut needing to be pulled before closing, so I get out, but then get distracted by the guy in the front, who is unable to open my front lid. By the time I get to the rear of the car....the guy tells me my rear deck lid does not close. ""Yea, there's a pin you need to pull."" I hope he didn't screw something up b/c I get a feeling the guy probably pushed down way too hard before figuring out something was stuck. I go to pull the pin, and it falls off in my hand. You gotta be kidding me. I've used it 100+ times, and NOW it breaks off? Now? So, my deck lid is stuck open on pit lane. I get a wrench and undo the front bolt and detach the strut. Lo and behold, the engine lid is totally out of alignment. The lid prong latch is way off center so I can't even close the lid. I remove the hood prong and lay the lid closed. Yup, massive gap on one side and it's laying metal on metal by an inch on the other side. Lid be crooked by almost 2 inches. How hard did the guy yank on it before realizing something's stuck? Ultimately, a tech at the event simply bent back my deck lid hinge so it would close properly. Nick did send me a replacement pin at no charge, but I decided to remove it, and return to the stock dual strut config for my tail. I narrowly averted a totally ruined day ($700 DE down the tubes) and an "driving on eggshells" 2 hour drive home with a crooked and taped shut deck lid. I don't think I want to deal with this risk every time the car leaves my hands or is unattended. |
Struts
Need a red "Remove Before Flight" flag on the strut.
