I do the same thing at my retail establishment. I accept credit cards & pay-pal to make it so a customer can easily transact with me. And please note that retail places like mine dont bury the fees into the invoice either. My price is the same whether it is paid by cash, or pay-pal (my price is set well before anyone can choose their mode of payment) from $1.00 to $thousands. That is how it works. I want to sell something, so I make it easy for the buyer to purchase it. I cant think of a store that does not do it that way. In fact Pelican is the same way. Look at their prices... No matter if you pay with visa, mastercard, amex, pay-pal or check. Its the same price. The buyer does not pay the fees. And they dont ask for them.

You do it the way you want, but I cant for the life of me see why this benefit (that I see as mostly for the seller) would be pushed onto the buyer.

Michael I don't want to be argumentative either and I think you bring up some valid points . However here is a different point of view

- if you are a successful business you do bury the credit card cost into the price of your merchandise- . Items are priced at margins to absorb all costs including the average loss paid to the third party ( credit card companies) Ultimately all buyers pay for those credit card fees if there isn't separate pricing. I am guessing you pay with a credit card at the gas station.

Although there is some advantage to the seller to get paid right away, some sellers don't care if it takes two weeks to get paid. ( ie by check) however frequently buyers want it now - along with the little bit of security that paypal provides so I see the major benefit of that service is to the buyer.

So why should a seller price his stuff higher for the guy that is willing to send a check? Paypal is a third party service just like credit card use or shipping .

Finally, this market isn't a retail location where 99% of the transactions are over in a matter of minutes with minimal effort. A seller can literally take a half hour to an hour getting suitable shipping materials, carefully packing, entering the data, making shipping labels and then driving parts to the shipper - at current shop rates that can be $50 to $125 in time that is mostly not recovered.

If both the buyer and seller can't ultimately agree there will be no sale. The buyer and seller both have a choice of whether they are willing to pay those fees. Unlike most retail operations where there is little room for negotiation

That is appreciated. However: You can think what you want, but my business (and many-many of my friends places) do NOT bury the cost of P.O.S.(point of sale) fees into our prices. Its plainly not fair period - to a cash or check customer.

Been doing it that way (successfully) since 1977. Its my fee as the seller, and I pay it.

Everyone should try it. That is the proper way to do it where I come from.

Well, that's the difference between a business transaction where the fee rates are dramatically lower and are built into your overhead costs and a transaction between a couple of hobbyists.

Personally I feel its greedy every time I see a hobbyist seller asking for paypal fees on a $50 part.

As I mentioned, I don't even consider asking to split fees unless the sell price starts to be substantial.

Yea I laugh at some of the stuff for sale but above that is the price.
I guess what tops that is if someone actually buys it.

Although not junk. It reminds me of the 20k 930 engine core.

A used coil? Depends on the price. They are getting old.

Not sure if paypal still have this rule but it was not legal to ask for paypal fees if you receive payment as part of the agreement when you open an account.

I hate this too and think it`s stupid to ask for it. I never buy anything from people doing this either

Wheels for sale $2000
paypal fees $100
gas to postoffice $14
actual cost of using the car to postoffice $9
cardboard box $1
ink $000.7

name a price, sell it! if you want 31 dollars ontop of the 2000, then set the price to $2031!

One man's junk is another man's treasure.
I needed door pockets for my 71T. I saw someone advertise junky ones that needed a rebuild-(ad even said they needed rebuild) for $1,000. You can search for it and my reply about 3 months back. That means he was selling little chrome angles and some angled steel for $1,000. I thought the guy was complete nuts and made what I thought was a more than fair offer for about $200 trying not to insult him.

He made some comment about "in my dreams" or somethign so rather than respond I moved on.

I checked back a few days later and he sold them that same day posted. I assume for full price.

I have no idea what this stuff if worth to someone else anymore.

Here's a great example of junk.

2 hours, 2 cut-off wheels and 1 Sawzall blade to get the seat pan out clean. Go to bike shop, get big box, 1/2 hour. 1/2 hour to cut box down to size, pack and ship.

$200 + $80 shipping, going to a good home to save a 72.

Still, this is not a retail environment though some on the board are definitely borderline retail, if not completely.

What's your cost per credit card transaction? I rather doubt it's a straight 3% of the sales price.
So, you don't bury it into the sale price of an item but it's built into your overhead right? What do you do with overhead costs?

To the hobbyist selling a 1k part, that % becomes substantial. I see no ethical issues with negotiating a shared payment of Paypal fees when both parties are benefiting from the service.

Wow, some of us are grumpy.

How about mentioning all the parts that are offered for free? So many of us, yes Shaun, you too, have given parts away or for postage only to someone you might need a little something that's a PITA to find.

Every little part has value, to some it's more than others.
