shift linkage puzzle

okay...I give up. How the hell do you get these two plastic/rubber bushings into the shift linkage knuckle "shift rod coupling" that resides in the little hatch just behind the front seats? Is it obvious that Im new at this? Im sure that I can push them in from the sides BUT from the looks of the bushings, they dont go in that way. Any help?

THANK YOU!

Seth

Seth:

I tried it myself then gave up in frustration and took it to my friendly mechanic, who used a hydraulic press!

Push the pin out.
Use a socket that is larger than the pin, place the socket on the bench or floor, and rest the coupler on the socket then drive the pin down with a punch (fom the other side) into the socket.
Don't get too nuts with the hammer as the housing is alum.
Hope this helps.

Worked great. Pushed the pin right out, put in the bushings with no problems. Thanks again.

I did it the same way, pushed the old thing out in vice, with a correct size tool.
Easy.

The putting back was made piece of cake, by cooling the small inner piece in a freezer for an hour or so, thus making it a bit smaller.

I replaced the plastic bushings in the shift rod coupling and the plastic parts in the shifter mechanism. Man...like a new car. Another question...I noticed when I reassembled the shift rod coupling behind the front seats, it wouldnt shift into gear properly...ie, over to the left and up was second gear when it should have been reverse. I adjusted it some and it works but it seems like it could be fine tuned. Is there some way of setting this as it should be? The back of the shift rod coupling connects with a set screw but the front part of it connects with a clamping nut/bolt. I can loosen that, pull the coupling back, turn it a little and then put it back and it changes how it shifts (ofcourse). Is there a magical place setting or is it trial and error. Im good at error.

thanks again

I am one expert but I started with the tranny and shifter in reverse mine is a 5 speed left and up is reverse. That gave me the most clearance and most obvious location for the shifter. With a little adjusting everything fell in place. I just did mine today.
