Dropped the 912 off for paint..Thoughts on potential changes.

Well,

The restoration has begun. The 68 was dropped off for bare metal stripping, repairs, and painting back to Ossi blue.

I was thinking (912 purist don't cringe) of filling in the side markers....and filling in the side deco trim. I think the 912 looks better without the side deco trim anyway and were the side markers really what Porsche wanted on their cars?

Of course in the end it's my car and I should do what I want, but was curious what others thought about deleting the deco side and reflectors.

Has anyone done this and if so do you have a photo?

I'll update as the car progresses.

My 2cents:
I have a 68 with the side markers removed. I understand the novelty of the one-year only markers, but IMO they were a last minute fix for the 1968 federal automotive standards & look like crap. You can always re-drill the holes & revert back if you want to, but going the opposite way will be costly, especially matching paint.
As for the rocker mouldings, I kept mine on. I've been tainted over the years and when I see something other than an R replica without the mouldings, I assume that someone did a quicky-fix rust repair on that section of the car & forgot to mark the mounting location of the mouldings.
Either way, Ossi Blue is a really great color.
Bill.

So funny, I too tend to feel that someone is hidding something if there is no rocker molding. I would remove the side markers, too. BTW, I love Ossi Blue!

Just for reference.....

I like the look of the rocker trim and side marker delete...Although done my the previous owner, I think this was a good choice when he had the car painted....Just my 2 cents.

+1 on Craigs car, you should see it in person. I still have the reflectors on my Ossi Bliue '68, but removed the rocker panel trim when I added the PORSCHE script on the side - it looked too busy to me with both on there.

Here is a photo of the car with photoshopped decal and no trim. This pic is what made me go the direciton I did.

Thanks for the picture, I was actually thinking of the stripes as well. (Car looks great by the way).

Quick question for you ruby911 and craig356....are your 912's lowered at all? Mine seems to sit much higher, and I prefer the way both of your cars look.

Thanks,

Randy (Rmally)

Thanks!!!

Thank you Randy and Farrell for the kind comments.....

Randy, both Farrell's car and my car have been lowered. I have had the pleasure of enjoying some north Georgia twisty roads with Farrell and his car runs and handles as good as it looks! These little 912's are a blast to drive.

All the best to you with your paint. Craig

My car was at factory height when I bought it and lowered shortly after bringing it home. It is not fro everyone, but I like a more aggressive stance - I just like the look. Here is a pic of mine and Craigs on a mountain run we did a few weeks ago. I used to run these roads in an '84 Carrera but find that he 912 is so much more fun for the twisties.

I like the rocker trim delete. My car does not have the side markers currently, but I will put them on when I repaint. I personally like the 1 year only aspects of the '68.

Nice cars!!

I would personally make it the way YOU WANT and now is the time.

I would delete those side lights.

If the side markers are in good condition, I'd like to make you an offer!

I would gladly ship them to you but they are in poor shape.

The two front are in fair shape, but only have one rear (it's bad).

Here's a picture, if they can do you any good PM me your address and I'll send you a Christmas present.

It will pry out - it really helps to get the rubber warm first using a heat gun on low or a hair dryer. I’d start at the rear. Carefully get a thin narrow object under the rubber and gently start prying up and out. It also helps to cover the rubber with soapy water. Once you get a small portion out it’s just a matter of slowly proceeding.

It's your car. Do with it as you please. I certainly have. I find it humorous when these cars are treated like they're the Holy Grail. They are nothing more than toys. When gas is outlawed (maybe) in 10?, 20? years from now, they will be boat anchors.
