914 trans/clutch issue

I have a 914 trans that works fine in reverse but when I go to use any of the forward gears its like they are not getting any power, the car will go forward slowly the motor will just rev up. I thought it would be the clutch was worn out but then thought if it was the clutch it wouldn't work in reverse. Was hoping anyone could clarify if that was the case, that a bad clutch wouldn't work in either direction or if it would work one way but not the other.

Clutch engagement is exactly the same forward or reverse, if you can move in reverse it isn’t the clutch. So you are either not actually getting a gear when you try forward, or you have a serious issue internally. Most likely your shifter is way out of alignment, or possibly if someone dissembled the gear box, they didn’t reinstall the shift forks correctly.

If the problem is all the forward gears, it is most likely the clutch.

If the problem doesn't occur in reverse, it is most likely not the clutch.

Reverse gear is the lowest gear in the box, so it may be that there is still some slippage in reverse but you get enough torque multiplication not not notice it.

I would suggest first checking the clutch adjustment. Then the shift linkage adjustment and checking the bushings. If none of those produce results, you're going to have to pull the gearbox. Happily it isn't super hard to do. The clutch will be very visible at that point, plus you'll have access to the whole gearbox.

Thank you for the info it was a clutch shifter adjustment. I am also having an issue with 2nd gear that hopefully you can help with. I can shift now into reverse and 3rd and 4th and 5th but not 2nd, hopefully this is just an adjustment issue

Unfortunately, issues with a single gear are more likely to be problems inside the gear box. By all means try adjusting the shift linkage, but there's a good chance that something will have to be done inside the gearbox.
