2.0L Suddenly missing badly

My 74' 2.0L suddenly started missing very badly and will not idle. Any ideas what could be wrong?

FI or carbs? Points or pertronix? if FI, make sure your injectors are plugged into the harness.

Thanks for the reply Chris. It is an FI engine (d-jetronic), with crane fireball xr700 ignition. I checked the injector connections but they seem fine.....

There are many posts here that could help you out.

Start with the aux air valve and see if the hose came off. if not, try plugging it so that the AAV is not used at all.

Check the CHT wire on the passenger side of the car near the rear tin. It is VERY hot down there and there is an insulator that protects the wire in the tin. Sometimes people melt these FI harness here and sometimes the CHT is not connected.

Is the MPS plugged in at the throttle body. Runs real weird with that unplugged so check it out.

What do the plugs look like? Wet or dry? and which ones.

If it runs really rough after you check the above, you could have dirty trigger points on the Dizzy. Remove them and contact cleaner them. Just a hint on removing the FI points from the dizzy. Remove the two screws, pull it out until it stops and then tilt the outside (plug) end up while you pull them out. I rotate my dizzy to do this and then reset the timing when I'm done. Sometimes the oil used in the Dizzy top can get into these points.

Check the ignition system very, very thoroughly. Make sure the vacuum and fuel hoses are in good shape and connected. Make sure that all the electrical wires are plugged in, and not loose. If wiggling a wire changes the way the engine runs, there is something wrong with that wire or its connectors.

Then move on to checking the FI components.

In the last 5 years we have had our stock 2l 914, everytime there has been missing or bad running it was the FI points. I just get a new set as they can test out fine and then not work or work erratically! They seem to last about 18 months or so and at the same time I usually put in new plugs, check all hoses for cracks at the ends replace the rotor and cap and none of them make much difference except for the FI points. Make sure the boot that goes over the connector is tight and there is no water/corrosion in the points connector. Good luck.
