take off the rocker pannels, the black things on the side, clean them out and check for rust. They get neglected, and collect dirt, mud and other stuff.

I'm in the process of tearing down my 914. I think I have all the rust located. There was a lot more than what I thought going into the project. You won't see a lot of it until you start tearing it all apart. Here were the areas that I have to repair...
Under battery tray: This is probably the worst rust area on my car. The engine shelf on that side is more or less gone. The rust has penetrated through the firewall although not too much. Even the trunk hinge point is weak from rust on that side. Floor Pans: Had some rust under the drivers seat. Also looks like a previous owner did some reapirs on the front half of the pan and around the pedal cluster. I'll probably just replace the whole thing. Longitudinals: They are shot. A previous owner did a repair on them but didn't get the chassis straight before he welded it in place. I plan to remove his repair and fix it right. Roll Bar Support: This area surprised me. I removed all the chrome trim and peeled the black vinyl or whatever that stuff is off and underneith there was some rust. It had penetrated in a few locations. Moisture must have gotten in there somehow. There are also some areas in the body that look like they have been filled with body filler. I'll probably have to patch a few areas here and there. I have a list of sheet metal parts that I have been compiling that I need to buy to repair all the rust. It totals about $800. I paid $1000 for the car and drove it home. I'll have a lot of hours into it but for about $2000 I'll have a near rust free 914. Probably could have bought one for that but where's the fun in that.

Heres a few more areas to check
1. inside the center tunnel area 2. front trunk gutter - pull up the seal 3. Inside the headlight buckets 4. under the front window trim 5. under the rear trunk seal 6. antenna area 7. front fender cowl areas 8. inside area back pad (would have to pull out the insullation to see - check for leaking rear window 9. inside door areas - look at the bottom area where the drain holes are from inside the door (i.e. remove the panels and vapor barriers). 10. looking from inside the front fender well; the area where the nose piece and front fender join. 11. the air vents inside the door jams - pull the black plugs Last edited by tod914; 05-23-2003 at 08:09 AM.. |

Don't forget to look under the carpet at the very back of the rear trunk by where the signal lights are.

Although you may/hopefully not have thisamount of rust it is very possible. There are alot of great looking rust buckets...A 914 has taken many a newbie for a very expensive rustride... When you are done with a rusty 914 restoration, you can truly becounted as a rustpert.

The only area with problematic rust on my car is the center tunnel at the rear. It's growing too. Part of the "keep it on the road and have some fun until I can afford to really restore it" syndrome.

I'm interested in methods to repair rust bubbles that occurs at the roll bar to qtr panel juncture. I have one small spot on each side of my car. From looking at exploded parts diagrams, it looks like this area is a sandwhich of the outer skin and inner roll bar reinforcement. Any ideas on how to get at this area from the inside/backside to repair it properly and keep it from coming back once repaired?
Thanks! Rob

looking at the factory manual, it looks like the best way to get to the inner roll bar is to cut and remove the fender. If you look at the pictures in the link norustscott posted, that is what they did. I have no experience with this but it looks to me the only way to be sure you get all the rust.

alright heres a few pictures of the main areas, its a big pain in the butt. How do you all fix the rust, i think right now my father and i are cleanin it up with a fine sander type thing, putting the rust acid on it and cleanin it till its no more, then fiberglass it, is that correct? Also take a look at the floor pans, its the passenger side, what do you guys think, i should prob buy new floor boards huh? I guess my biggest concern is that one picture where its like the running board or whatever you call it, its rusted pretty bad, what should i do? |

how bad is the rust? like is the metal pretty thin or is it just surface rust? If you have to put fiberglass on the stuff you should probably just weld it up or get a new piece. Use a rust killer, such as ospho or what everyone loves on here, por 15. I use ospho just because it's cheap and easy. On the floor pan just clean it up and I like to use hammerite on it, but others use por 15 or other things. Just make sure when you clean up the rust you make sure you got everything....or else you'll be fixing what you thought you fixed in another 6 months. On the exterior stuff I like to shoot a coat of etching primer and then clean it off and just use a skim coat of filler to fill all the little dimples left by the rust. Then primer and paint like normal.
