CV Joint Gaskets

Went to the local bug shop, they have most of the 914 parts I need. He says bug CV joints are a different size than 914, so the bug gasket for the CV joint won't fit. He no longer carries 914 CV joint Gaskets, and we both thought running without a gasket wouldn't be a big deal.

Is this a mistake?

Bugs have a lip on the flange that the cv mounts to that seems to seal the two pieces together well, I have never seen a bug cv leak grease between the cv and flange without a gasket. 914s on the other had have just a flat mating surface between the cv and the flange, without a gasket these seem to fling grease.

Do you think running without gaskets on the cv's would be "ok"?

Have you tried here at Pelican? If they don't have it, try your local Porsche dealer. My Porsche guy can get a lot of the parts I need.

Pelican sells them for .95 cents each, I would consider it a very wise investment to buy about a half a dozen or so for future use. It will fling grease all over if you do not run them. Just my opinion.

Plus there is a certain amount of grip that is allowed by the compression, it will come apart without gaskets, bet ya.. they like to come apart with them.

Use the gaskets and change the serated washers on the bolts each time you take them off. Actaully, you're not supposed to reuse the bolts, but I do if they are fresh. Pelican has all this in stock.
