Question Is this too tough to do?

My 76 has been popping out of first gear and I have
just about eliminated all of the easy fixes.

Linkage adjusted, checked motor and transmission mounts
and I will change out the shift bushings.

Someone suggested that it could be the dogtooth and slider
inside the tranny.

I've read all the info on all the boards that I could find plus the
Haynes manual and the workshop manual. It doesn't look TOO
hard.

My question is, Given my level of mechanical knowledge (learn as
the car breaks) Is changing out the slider and 1st gear dogtooth gear too much for a novice to attempt on his own?

Your thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated

john

Hows the clutch. I'm right in the middle of it all. Mine, so far, has been a combination of everything.

First, I replaced the syncro, not too much of a problem.

I then decided to pull the tranny and I was suprised at what I found.

The throw-out arm retainer was gone(in pieces)

The throw out bearing was hanging on.

The clutch was history. (The disc was down to its metal and rubbing the flywheel

The ball pin had 2 washers on it which indicated to me the flywheel was at its end. PLus that too was the cause of my tranny leak. It wiggled loose

Lets not forget about the coupler. The PO "replaced all bushings" BUT where there are 2 bushings needed, there was only one.

As for the syncro, it wasnt really bad. Worn, but still good.

So, I finally figured out my problem.

My question to you will be when did you last replace the clutch or when was it last replaced? I'm a novice at this and find replacing the clutch on a 914 a piece of cake, so far! Its just fixing all the corners the PO's cut.

Oh, I've also gone stainless on all hardware.

The clutch seems to be fine. The car will shift into all gears without
any problem. I've only had the car for about 1 1/2 years but it
seems that the PO took really good care of it.

Careful with the stainless. Its not as strong as alloy steel and has a bad habit of galvanic corrosion with Aluminum. If you find white powder cruding up the threads on tapped holes in aluminum, that is why. Good for exhaust though.
