secondary trunk release
for you owners such as myself who own the 914s with the reflector "Porsche" lens (over where the normal keyed trunk lock location and now opens with an electric solenoid release)....here is a back up way to gain entry into your trunk in the event of soleniod failure. Drilling a small hole through lens (and sheet metal behind it ) directly inline with the interior release assembly enables user to push a small rod into hole and manually push lock open. a straight piece of wire hanger works well and the hole drilled is minimal in size making it almost impossible to see

Here is mine with the modification he mentioned. It has been like this for about 2 years now and I did not even know it was there for the first six months. You gotta look really close.

I have a similar setup, except that I didn't drill thru the reflector. Instead I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the trunk, connected one end a braided s/steel wire to the release lever, ran the wire thru the hole & attached a key ring to the end of the wire. I've only needed it a few times but - it works great. I used a deep sea (shark) leader for the braided s/steel wire. Works great & already has loops @ both ends. Hope this helps.

do a search in the archives. I have posted about a source for the solenoids before. They are about $10.
Thanks for the tip on the shark leader, that was the part I was in need of.

You have to buy a 911 reflector and then cut it to size. Or buy one from someone who already did that. Or maybe, if you're lucky, you can find one of the ones that someone actually made to fit 914s specifically. Though those haven't been made in many years and are tough to find.

Their not that hard to find. I found mine on this site in the classifieds. They often appear on evil bay, but you can also try 914club's classifieds.

Those, as I implied, are almost always cut-down 911 reflectors.

How do you guys install these trunk solenoids? It looks like you have to have a very small push solenoid and somehow mount it behind the release latch, inside the bracket.

don't bother with a solenoid...they WILL fail sooner or later. Go to the 914club.com bbs and lookup an unbelievable engineer under the screename "engman". He makes a cable release mechanism (all parts needed from the trunk to the interior compartment) to replace the solenoid setup. It's foolproof, great quality, easy to install (did mine in about 30 minutes). Alot of people have already converted.
You can find him by searching or go to the section for goods being sold by members. Jim
