Color of Paint

Need some Help. I'm trying to identify the color that I had on my original 914 to duplicate it on my existing one. I found the color. I just don't know the name other than the obvious "Green". If you could open up http://www.dgi.net/914/ to the pictures under "Did you Forget Something?. That's it. What color is it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the car in the link is a 75-76 which used VW paint and numbers. Where as the 70-74 cars used a Porsche paint and code.

Example, my 75 Napal Orange looks similar but slightly brighter than a 74 Signal Orange. I only noticed the difference when the two cars were parked side by side. So make sure you look at the correct year code.

Dr. Johnson's book _The 914 & 914/6 Porsche: A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity_ lists all of the colors and paint codes in one of the appendices. There are several green colors over the years, but appears to be only one green each year. Tell me the year and I will look up the color and paint code for you.

This book is worth having as a reference.

Also, PPG maintains a paint code library where they can provide their body shops the recipe to match any original paint, but I think they need the manufacturers paint code first. (There were atleast 10 different pigments in my '75 copper metalic, even though "near" colors only required about half as many).

Thanks, That would be of great help! My original car "71" was this color. I understand the picture shows a "75", but it looks pretty close. I'm not trying to match a paint job, just trying to get as close as possible to what I once had. I will be changing colors from white to this green. Thanks for your help.

Some of the Auto Body Supply stores are starting to phase out older makes and models through the introduction of computer data base catologing, and newer paint product lines. The newer low V.O.C.(volatile organic compounds) paint needs to be reformulated. (every car,every color!!) This is a huge undertaking for the paint manufacturers. So as you can imagine demand takes presidence. The ray of sunshine with the introduction of computers to the paint store is the wonderful color match scanner.
Most of the manufactures have a hand held scanner that takes a picture of your paint and creates a formula in seconds. The acurracy is incredible.

Rich....for someone in the deepest darkest North, very good. VOCs, AKA Volatile Organic Compounds AKA as paint thinners.

Most paints have been re-formulated, mostly 'cause of smog requirements. Small problem though, they are toxic to the painters....they now SHOULD use supplied air masks as opposed to filtered air masks.

The old paints are long gone...forget about getting ORIGINAL touch up paint. It is either all dried up or fake...you can get some touch up paints from local auto parts stores but it is trial and error....

As a former collision shop owner (and a licensed hazardous waste generator) I was required to keep an MSDS(material saftey data sheets) in the file cabinet on all the nasties. Paint,solvents,ect. I was the unwilling subject of a surprise inspection by the MPCA.(Minnesota Pollution Control Agency) I had a few infractions, (they need to find something and nobodies squeeky clean) and received an L.O.W.(letter of warning). After I corrected the infractions, and sent in point-counter-point documentation to my inspector, (about 20 pages!)I recieved an all expense paid trip from the MPCA to their convention and received an award for outstanding efforts in compliance. I guess I kinda spun out there for a second. But I kinda know paint.
I guess my point is, If your doing an overall refinish and can't locate a supply store that can mix your color by the code located in the drivers side door hinge pillar, Just have them scan the car. The service is free and the computer (in most cases)will render a blendable match. Good Luck
