914/VW Transporter FI
My 914/4 2L fuel injection unit has packed up, and I've located a VW transporter 2L fuel injection unit which I am told is equivalent. Is this correct, or are the temp/pressure sensors calibrated differently ??

The "GE" block 77-79 bus engine I had came with an L-jet type of FI. So there are basically NO interchangable parts. It is basically the same as the 914 1.8L L-Jet but as you said the calibration would be completely different.
It is possible that other year Transporters had D-Jet but I doubt it. Key indicators of a D-Jet is the brain is about 1.5 times the size, the distributor has a 3 pin plug on the side, and there is a manifold absolute pressure sensor vs. the air flow meter on a L-Jet. From my fumbling around with it the wiring harnesses don't look like they would even swap. Also I've heard the injectors are different resistences so swapping them is a bad idea too. |

JP is right about the fuel injection system. No transporters came with D-Jet injection. Early ones, in fact everything under 2.0 had carbs. Even the Vanagon used the L jet when it was introduced in 81. Don't waste your time with the L jet. Get your D jet fixed. I am sure you will be happier with it in the long run. Just my opinion.

How do you know your FI has "packed it up"? If you suspect it has, I suggest hunting through Kjell Nelin's D-jet Guide on the 914 Fan Page.
http://www.914fan.net It's in the "Tech Refs" section. It does have one typo, though. It says to check the MPS resistance between pins 8 and 10, and between 7 and 10. The second 10 should be a 15, so you are checking between pins 8 and 10, and between pins 7 and 15. --DD |
