possibly the one, is she worth it??
Well here goes, I am almost in a position to buy my first car, I just have to buy out the lease on the jetta my parents leased for me and then sell it. It is part of a huge insurance debacle I have been going through. So, once I sell my jetta I am hell bent on buying my first porsche(im a youngin, 20). My dad and I spent half a year restoring a 74 911 and for my first car I want to do a 914.
A friend of mine from school is selling his 1973 914. The engine has been bumped up to 1.9L from a 1.7, dan gurney lightweight rims(according to him), good paint, clean interior, new shift linkage bushings, MOMO Prototipo and some other small things. I have not had a chance to really go through the car and check for our favorite enemy rust and any other little problems. It also has a new MC and he claims there is less rust than would be expected, it has been a cali car its whole life. So, assuming what he tells me is truth, with minimal non structural rust I think his asking price of 4,500 is a deal. Am I totally wrong with this assumption? I have lived my life in the 911 world so 914 prices are a shot in the dark for me. Thanks a ton, Ryder |

If there really is very little rust, this is a reasonable price.

Drive it a service shop in the greater Los Angeles are, and have someone do a PPI on it. I'm assuming it's carbed, or this guy messed with the FI to accomadate the increased displacement. You may want to have the rest of it checked out too.

Thanks Jason, I am going to call him and take it over to TRE and have Dave and Tyson look it over in the next week and get a good estimate from them. Other than that, I am going to check for the rust under carpets, battery tray, front end, check out the suspension and the usual. Are there any other hidden problems to look for so I can save the guys at TRE some time?

Just be very thorough checking all electrical equipment. Bad wiring is a pain if you do it, and expensive if someone else does it. A lot of parts rival the cost of their 911 brethren too, so as always said, buy the nicest one you can afford.

for $4500, I think it should have fairly fresh tires, brakes, and synchros too. Trust your ears- does it sound regular- smooth, no excessive valve sounds? It should track and brake straight.

'73 914
I'm sorry, this is sorta a dumb question but... I thought that the '73s had 1.8s or 2.0s. This is a 1.9 bumped up from a 1.7?? Just curious.

73's are either a 1.7 or a 2.0...the 1.8 came online in 74.

1.7 == 90mm bore x 66mm stroke. 96mm big-bore kit -> 1911cc.
BTW, the 1.7-version 96mm cylinders are very thin, and not as reliable as the ones for the 1.8 or 2.0 engines. --DD

Every rebuild I raised the compression, hotter cam, etc....last was 10.5:1, 86a webcam, 40mm Dells, etc...list goes on. Mechanic said that motor would maybe last a year...that was 5 years ago Never failed yet, just honed a few times. Maybe I got the good ones, which P/C's are you refering to?

The ones that fit into the registers in the 1.7 heads with no modifications. If you measure, you'll find that they are very thin...

I forget the exact numbers, but they are even thinner than the big "slip-in" cylinders for the Bug that everyone loves to hate...

Should have mine apart in the next few months.
I'll revisit this when the time comes. Last time I had a tough time finding rings for it.
