I have a scare: On my way to the girlfriends house, at interstate speeds, I rolled up my window to avoid all the traffic noise. While rolling it up, I noticed it got VERY hard to crank at the top. Thinking the door might be "ajar" I tried to open it at speed (seatbelt on of course)and the door was stuck. After slowing down at the exit, the door opened normally. I did the body sag test just a few weeks ago (parked in the PO's garage) and it passed just fine. I have come to the conclusion that the windshield is "loose" and that the wind at speed pushes it against the door. When out of the car, this opinion is furthered by closing the door (from the outside) with the window up (easily done with no pressure on the windshield) and watching the windshild move forward slightly.

Uh, my sagger does just that. Door is ok, but the window is tight at the top.
May be same symptoms but different problem though. Strange that it would just go all of a sudden. I believe there may be an adjustment for either the main window or most likely for the wing window to move the top forward a hair. My passanger window does the same thing but I haven't had the time (now the weather) to check on this. Does anyone have any ideas if this is worth looking into?

The channel that the window runs in is adjustable. There is a screw with a lock nut at the bottom. If you open the door you can see it from below. If you take the door panel off there is an adjustment at the top as well. But not much.

I have a 1972 and after the window dropped out of it's track a number of times, I took the door apart and did the adjustments that the prev. poster described. I believe, that there are two different mechanisms used on 914's, so the adjustment procedure may be different.
As to the sag test, just to be sure, look into the jacking hole to check for rust. Also, check from the front edge of the rear wheel opening, behind the rocker panel, for a good look. If the jack receiver is rusted out, there is probably a good change that the longtitudinal behind it may also have rust. The best way to check is to remove the rocker panel itself. Eric |
