Please ... someone try to convince me ... that as SOON as this sophomoric boy-racer-wanna-be rice movie came out (with a 1-star rating, a box office hit, and they're planning a sequel}, that the topics haven't suddenly veered (pun intended) to "NOS" and "Turbocharge" and ballistic projectile piston meltdowns.
OK, call me prude/wussy/lame/old-fart, but if you want rice, then buy rice. I realize the 914 has all these transformation capabilities, but there are transparent lines you shouldn't cross just for the sake of the vehicle. It doesn't matter how well you think you've planned things out, when dealing with 30-year-old hardware, it's GUARANTEED something major is gonna blow. And Murphy's Law will assign THAT to the most expensive part. I know, here it comes; flame on. All I ask is that you remember, "A 914 is a 914; nothing more, nothing less. Why fight it?" |

Not that Im planning NOS or turbo but...
IMHO a turbo'd or NOS'd 914 or any porsche for that matter is a far cry better than any turbo'd or NOS'd "ricer". I think that the ideas about turboing and NOSing 914's have been around long before anyone tryed to put a F1 spoiler on a Honda civic. The Type four motor is capable of handling a turbo as has been shown by many owners although it probably reduces the life of the motor. I have never personally seen a NOS'd 914 but I am sure it has been done before but probably drastically reduces the life of the motor. One more thing: Probably 98% of Porsche lovers are anti-ricer and opposed to the veiws that the ricer boys try propagate. God knows I've never drag raced my 914! Kelly |

I agree with you, Rouser, and I don't think the 'topic trend' is merely coincidence. But people blow up their cars everyday, with or without cinematic inspiration.
It's all up to what you value isn't it? Ed |

I am going to sit outside of the theater with a couple of rolls of contact paper, some sissors and some coffee cans and make a mint selling custom graphics and tail pipes.
The only thing dumber than that movie has been the interviews with the "star" of the movie. What a dolt. The Friday that movie was released I watched a line of 15+ cheese-ball rice boys bouncing on thier bump stops into the theater parking lot - 3 tier wings and 5" tail pipes everywhere. It was like they were going to a revival. I am usually all about being an individual and try to look at the quality of a car and it's modifications vs. if it is "my" particular style. 95% of those things (at least in Colorado) are total crap - cut springs, poorly installed "ground effects" and a bolt on muffler (you know, 1" inlet, 5" outlet). Lets not forget the clear lenses - how 'bout some strobes... Interestingly enough, about 3 months ago I saw a real type R in Boulder. It was a very nice looking car. It looked nothing like the tacky junk these guys are building. Sorry, rant over - -S |

"... one of the tightest movies of all time ..."
Yer kiddin' me, right? The minute I saw the full-length preview in the theater (went to see "Shrek"; what a hoot!), I knew it was going to raise the standard for a movie that "blows." I'll go see "Tomb Raider" instead. But what do I know ... I thought the chase scenes in the movies "Bullit", "The Seven-Ups", and "Ronin" were sweet. |

speaking of movies that suck...
Does anyone remember an old late 70's early 80's move called "condor man"? I think its a disney movie or somethin. The movie really sucked but it had about 5 black 70's 911's in it that went on a kind of cheesy car chase. Real cool cars. I saw it. Truth be known it was only missing one small element - class.
Other than that, it was the best movie ever... Gotta go - it's after dark and I want to try out my newly installed underbody neon lights on my "race car". -s |

I thought the movie was a lot of fun. It was nice to see a movie not completely surronded and inended on some guy getting a girl. this was about adrenaline. I myself have posted a couple of topics on nos. I have been toying with the idea for years on my bug. I do think that most of us have at least thought about it at one point in time. I think the movie just gave it that little nuge back onto the topic of the week.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but can't wait to see it. Ricers or not it's great to see a movie about cars. One of the best car movies was the original Gone in 60 Seconds (made in the 70's not the new one). Horrible acting, decent plot, but a 40 minute car chase that sees 93 cars destroyed. Forget about Mr. Cage and his nos equiped shelby, I'll take H.B. Halicki in his plain 72 mustang anyday.

The modification that always cracked me up was the single, large windshield wiper in place of the standard pair. My thought is that it cannot be more efficient, so the only reason to add it to your car would be to make your Probe different from all the other Probes on the road. With this in mind, I told my wife that there are a lot of Oldsmobile Aleros exactly like hers, so I'm going to disable her wipers and buy a colobus monkey and chain him to the hood with goggles and a squeegee for when it rains. Maybe I'll give him a poncho too.
Now, THAT would be different. You certainly don't see utility rain monkeys everyday. I have way too much time on my hands. ------------------ Ray 73 914 2.0L |

I have to laugh reading some of the comments about TFaTF. I saw it the other night, I thought it was fun, stupid, flashy, ridiculous, and entertaining. The theater I saw it in was packed mostly with 14-17 year-old girls who had come to see Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and not that many Riceboys!
Whether people like it or not, the Riceboy thing is hot right now and this movie is the "Saturday Night Fever" for this movement. I was surprised at the attention paid to technology in the film, much more so than in most throwaway movies like this. There were some interesting special effects, too, such as the "birds eye view" of the NOS charge going through the engine. As for the chase scenes, I thought they were entertaining, but not on the same level as crazed scenes from films like "Bullit" and "Ronin". The Riceboy is also the auto aftermarket industry's best friend. Watching these guys put $10K of shiny metal on their engines must make suppliers drool. It has benefits for even us 'po 914 guys, as it puts money into the hands of people who supply wheels, tires, and other components that we consume. Personally, if I were Wayne, I'd be selling to the Riceboys, too. And besides, Ricecars are so ridiculous that I get a charge out of seeing one! As for the illegal behavior depicted in the film (I'm talking about the street racing, not the incredibly stupid method of truck hijacking that they showed), I don't condone it and I think it represents a fairly small fraction of the activities of the Riceboys. Most of these guys are just like you and me, and aren't looking to get ticketed or have their cars confiscated. But it makes for an exciting movie. Brad Anders |

Now, if we start seeing the teenie boppers with poncho'd monkeys on their hoods...we will know that they've been sneeking peeks at our forums! I have a friend that has an Integra Type-R that he takes out at our PCA DE's and I have to tell you...that car is absolutely incredible! He has added a straight pipe, slicks, and a cool air intake on a, uh, LEASED CAR! He burns up the brake pads...Acura replaces them! He takes off the straight pipe and the intake and takes it in for oil changes etc. It is quite mild mannered below 5000 RPM's but its like a motorcycle power band above that and it sounds AWESOME! If I wasn't a die hard Porsche/VW nut that would be my ride! It definitely keeps up with all but the most serious 911. I can corner with him, but he leaves me in the straits. No tails or ground effects needed. He has a set of cheap Kosei wheels for the slicks that he throws on and has a great time. Obviously I am impressed, but I'm still driving my 914! Brian

The best car movie is Lemans, where else can
you see GULF 917's at top speed from the cockpit, there is a 914 in the movie #40 which keeps getting lapped. Speedvision had a special on the making of the movie hosted by Steve McQueens son. He tells of having his dad take him for a ride in the 917 he said it was just awsome. SRC="http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/image_uploads/lemans.gif"> |

Yo, whitemike_04; my nephew went to see "The Rush To The Flush" under duress (his 15-year-old neighbor begged him pretty-please to take him) and stated, "Unk, in a nutshell? It blows."
Do I have to go see it? Nope; I'll take HIS word for it over yours. I'll wait till it comes out on frisbee, which should be in about 2 weeks! [This message has been edited by Rouser (edited 06-27-2001).] |
