Starting at the front trunk

Here's what I'm starting with.



Not too bad. The car had aftermarket air conditioning, so the hole in the floor needs to be patched and welded shut. There really isn't a rust problem in the trunk, but I am thinking of POR-15ing the entire inside.

Here are a few more shots.

Here is my first question. The smaller hose that is coming out of the charcoal canister is only about 8 inches long and goes nowhere. Where should it go? It seems like it might go to the small hose that is coming out of the gas filler neck. It doesn't seem to go anywhere either.

It should go to a vapor expansion tank which sits on top of the fuel tank - which yours is missing.

Which what? There is an "expansion tank" that should be on top of the fuel tank, wrapped partway around the filler neck. The cannister should have the small hose connected to the expansion tank.

There are two hoses I was asking about. They are both the same size. One is coming out of the filler neck. I gather it is supposed to be attached to an expansion tank. Anyone have a picture of that?

The other hose is coming out of the canister on the right side of the fuel tank. I still don't know where that is supposed to go?

Is any of this stuff useful? Necessary?

I believe both small hoses go to the expansion tank.

You'll have to use your imagination, but this thing wraps partway around the fuel filler neck and lays on top of the tank.

Its function is to provide an isolated air space so the tank can "breathe" as things expand and contract. It also provides the air that goes into the tank as the gas comes out. The expansion tank is what is vented to the charcoal cannister, which absorbs the fuel vapors so you get less evaporative emissions and less fuel smell.

Useful? Yup! Necessary for the car to run? Nope. (I believe it may be a legal requirement to keep the system intact, though.)

As far as usefulness, its there for a reason, which you may not care much about. If you can make it correct, I am sure the environment would love you for it.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense. I was wondering about an unused bracket that was between the window washer bottle and the fuel filler neck. I'll look for a used one.

Hey, I think I have a vapor expansion tank if you need one. I am not using it and will give it to you, just pay for shipping. I will have to look for it Friday if you want it, but I am almost positive I still have it.

Sheetmetal ordered today. 20 Ga Cold rolled steel for the hole. I'll start the grinding this weekend.

Why not just buy a 911 six and use that hole for a front mounted oil cooler??

Think it'd be easier....(just kidding) I know I am converting one now...HELL of a lot of work..:-)

Show me a picture of an oil cooler setup. If it is like a 911's, that might be doable now even though I don't need the cooler now. I will later.

I'm planning on installing a 916 front bumper in the near future.

Just buy the front trunk floor out of a scraped 914 as it fairly easy to install and weld the floor in. I've done it.

I cleaned the rust off and sprayed some primer around.

The POR-15 kit was ordered a few days ago.

The expansion tank arrived yesterday. Thanks so much.

The sheet metal should be here next week. The welder supply place messed up the order.

Por-15 trunk restoration kit arrived as well as the 4'x10' sheet of metal. I'm ready to start cutting and welding.

A little update.

I cut all the crappy metal out of the floor of the trunk. I still have some left to remove before I weld in the new metal I got.

I also removed the old bumper in preparation for installing the 916 front bumper I got from Greenwater.
