I have 1973 914 and its leaking gas, directly under the gas tank area.I was told it could be the gas tank itself. Is this common with the 914 due to its age?

Nope. Its probably an old gas line that is leaking.

I agree, probably a gas line. The first thing I did on my 76 was drove it around until I was about out of gas, then headed straight for my parents house. I pulled the tank, borrowed my dad's little pickup truck, and went and bought new fuel lines. Took about two hours (I had to go back a few times and go to subway for lunch) and about $10 ($20 if you count lunch)

And if you are taking out the tank I would put a new strainer and seals on the fittings in the bottom of the tanks.
Mine leaked at one of the seals. Best $10 you'll ever spend! Except for beer maybe

The seals, at least one of them, is NLA.
 Wish I knew exactly what they were made out of so we could replace em! --DD

Dave...
the material seems to be like the washers used on carburetor fittings....it is like a red fiber washer that I have used on 911 Solex and Webers...the carb ones are just smaller I haven't looked for any as I usually have salvaged the old ones....maybe someone has a source for the red fiber ones... John |

I got mine at a local FLAPS.
Had to take in old ones (wasn't much left after scraping and chipping) and size them up. I think they were 2 diff sizes. But ya, they were just fuel line gaskets, like on banjo fittings etc.
