Post Clutch help

I know ive asked this before but i just cant figure it out. after i disconnect the lcutch cable fron the transaxle my peddal asmebly holds the clutch peddal down against the firewall. this just does not seem right. my car is a 72. I am inclined to beleve the spring in the peddal assmebly should push the peddal up so that when everything is hooked up the pressure is off the clutch when your not stepping on it. Ive looked at the assembly and i just dont see how that spring could be in there backwards?? can anyone give me some insight on how this is supposed to work?

The spring-loaded clutch pedal is correct.

It maintains tension on the cable and clutch assembly, but not so much that it's actually engaging it. This in-turn allows more precise adjustment at the tranny end, since the clutch system is already preloaded.

The brake pedal spring (and assembly) works the opposite, since you don't want any preloading to occur there.
