Post 911 clutch in 914?

I've read that the early 911 clutch is a worthwhile upgrade to a 914. Can anyone advise me as to what is involved? Is it just the 6-spring disc?

Thanks

Dave

What are you looking to accomplish? Better stick or longevity?

Try going with Kennedy Engineering...they make all the conversion clutches and flywheels for the v6 and 8 convsersions in the VW and Porsches....they make a 225mm clutch and flywheel pacakge with a springless Kevlar disc. Cheaper than the 911 oem and lasts forever.

I used that set up with a 225+hp 911 motor in my 914. I abused the hell out of it....definitely "Mikey Proof"....

Thanks Mike.
I'm trying to find the best thing for my 'budget' 2056cc engine. I have two stock clutches and both appear worn. I also have a $100 discount off $200 worth of parts at the Porsche parts counter - something about my PCA region winning the membership award. I feel like the guy in the tails on the community chest card!
I won't be subjecting it to too much HP till I find that six.

Well both Motor Meister and Kennedy have a 215 kevlar disc that slips in the stock flywheel. The 911 part # always adds major zeros after the price tag.....

Sorry about the over-kill option....I always think that way....8^)

Can't help it....MORE POWER MR.Scott!!!

I have a kevlar disk in my race 914 and it chatters and such until it gets hot, then it's great. I also have a 3500# pressure plate and that is great too, except in stop and go traffic. The stock cables seem to be able to handle the extra load of the pressure plate. I remembered we also have a disk with the springs which halps to add a little shock absorbing to the instant when the clutch engages. Good luck.

When my old clutch grenaded I replaced it with the 6 spring 911 clutch. The disc is the stock Sachs unit (no kevlar for me, and since I am just running a 1.7L motor, the power is not the issue.) The only upgrade or change from the 4 spring unit is the clutch disc itself. The rest of the pressure plate and accompanying bits are exactly the same. The literature claims a smoother take-up and feel, and I have to admit, it feels great (certainly no chatter in my daily driver.) Since the extra cost was only about $20.00 I definitely thought that it was worth splurging on my budget.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys - Herb's solution is the one I was wondering about for this engine - I'm a while away from the kind of wild machinery that Mike and John run (or ran). Patiently waiting on the right six...
thanks again

The stock (new) Sachs 2.0L clutch held up very well behind the 2.4L six in my car.
After 18 mos, it was practically wear free.

When changing over to the 2.7L, I went with a Kennedy Eng, stage II pressure plate(215mm) and the stock disc (per Kennedy's recommendation). Works fine, thank you very much, but I am easy on equiptment.....maybe that's why I'm slow.

Hallo

The early 911 clutch is tha same like the 914 clutch. Only the S engines had a improved unit but the friction plate is NLA and will not be reproduced due the asbestos content.

Using the sport clutch pressure plate needs a reinforcment from the bulkhead around the clutch cable tube ( except the 914/6 )

Grüsse,
Roland
