Cooling tin questions

I'm wondering if a 911 type doghouse cooling tin with an 11-blade fan is a fairly "direct"bolt on issue or if it takes some modification? Also do you have to run the stock 2.0l cooling tin at the same time or does that elevate that problem? Is there other issues to consider? What is the weight savings or is there any? can anbody out there help me out with this question. Thanks in advance~MARK

I asked someone that had done this in the San Diego area and they said the large top piece had to be trimmed some and holes drilled for the screws, etc as it is a four not a six. They also used the tin from the six around the barrels as it is shapped for the air coming from the top not the sides of the barrels. This was on a 2.4l race engine in a 914.

You could just buy the complete setup from FAT Performance down in Orange CA. I don't know what all it includes, but I presume that they've got a complete setup.

You can also check out Reichert Tuning in Germany. They have a website http://www.ismi.net/riecherttuning/
but shipping the product might be expensive.

I just found this link: http://www.spiretech.com/~opshroud/ , which is another company that makes an upright fan shroud ("911 shroud") conversion for Type IVs.

I did a search on "VW Type IV" and came up with this page, that has Type IV engine links. That's where I found the above--I'd seen the Reichert stuff, but forgotten the URL. Anyway, the links page is there: http://www.tunacan.net/t4/links.htm . Might be worth checking out.

DD wrong? It cant be...say it aint so!!! ;-)
Well he aint wrong that often thats for sure..

>>I just found this link: >>http://www.spiretech.com/~opshroud/ , >>which is another company that makes an >>upright fan shroud ("911 shroud") >>conversion for Type IVs.

It looks like thats what it is, but it uses a T1 or T4 fan with a T1 alternator. This one is for fitting a T4 in a bug.

The picture show a "ready for bug" install.

The FAT or the Rennspeed Motorsports setup seems to be the way to go.

The other one talked about was Sharpbuilt Products but that URL is dead now.

MotorMeister also sells one but I have not seen it.

Guess I shouldn't have been in such a hurry. I saw the link, so I copied it. Didn't follow it to see what they had.

It does look interesting, though. A "doghouse" cooler setup for a Type IV. Hmmmm. I wouldn't be surprised if it (just barely) fit in the 914 engine bay. And it might be a less-expensive alternative than the 911 fan conversion, since the 911 alternator (in particular) is so bloody expensive. I bet you could get a Type I alternator for MUCH cheaper!

Very interesting.

Thanks for all your replys. Hey Dave i have seen a few 914's with doghouses on them. A guy that used to work for AA Skip Page has one on his carbuerated 2.0l 4 racer. No one addressed the fact about weather i could get away without the normal cooling tins if I could I think it would mean about a 5lb. weight savings plus I think it looks pretty trick. Anybody else have anymore thoughts??
Thanks again guys for the input!!~MARK

There was an ad in the back of Erupean Car Nov/97 with a 908/917 (?) type fan for the 914. It claimed to gain 10% horse power over a 911 type fan and 25% (WOW) over stock Type-IV fans. It is 22 lbs. lighter than stock and puts out 1250 cfm (twice that of stock over the cylinders and heads). It was basically a fiberglass shroud that had an electric fan mounted flat on top of it (that's why I compare it to the 917, the company made no mention of it). I know that it required use of carbs or aftermarket FI and I don't know if there was a way to hook up an alternator, but I'm sure something could be worked out. It also metions lightening the flywheel, so that may be where the weight is lost.

I remeber hearing metion about it being sactioned in some type of racing (SCCA I think).

Also look at some of the old posts on the 914 club site. I remember some guy posting about an upright fan shoud his company was starting to produce.

Look in the back of any issue for a place called "Air-cooled Clasics" it's a tiny ad but I think they are the ones who sell it ($500-$600 maybe).

Either go to the 914 conversion page or follow this link http://home3.inet.tele.dk/box164/html/engine.html
