Oil is everywhere in the engine compartment - Need Help!

I was wondering if any of you 914 guru's out there could help me out with a current issue I am having.

I recently started driving my 73 914 1.7L around town. I filled up with some new 91 octane gas and then added some octane boost as well as some injector cleaner. Don't know if that has anything to do with it but like just a couple days after that, when I was driving home, noticed it was smoking a little more than usual. I open up the engine compartment to take a look and oil is everywhere. After looking a bit more, it seems most of the oil is coming up from the exhaust ports on top of each head. This goes into a valve or T and then heads up to the Air filter. I look inside and there is about a good 1/4 inch of oil in the air filter.

I did a bit searching around (mostly on these forums) and found it could be a bad PCV valve but I check that. As in, I made sure it closed and open correctly by blowing on it. it seems to seal and open up really well. I thought the issue could be because of abnormal pressure in the crank case. I put new oil in it and just filled up with a lower octane gas and it still is doing the same thing.

After looking more into it, it seems like Cylinder #1 isn't even Firing. I have spark, I took the injector out and turned over the engine and it's firing just fine but when I have the car running and pull the Lead to the injector or the spark plug wire, there is no change. Guess I have been running on 3 cylinders this whole time. My car has never really had a lot of power so I really didn't even notice until this started to happen. I have a compression gauge and with a generic test, seems like it's only getting about 90PSI where it's suppose to be around 120 to 150. Cylinder 3 is at about 123. I did not take out all 4 spark plugs and do a proper test, but this generic test at least told me something.

At this point, I have pulled off the exhaust left exhaust pipes and removed the Valve cover (going to do a valve adjustment because it hasn't been done in awhile). both exhaust ports are not oily at all and look normal (to me).

At this point, I am at at a lost of what could have caused this (just out of the blue to this extreme). I am hoping one of you guys have come across something like this and could lead me in the right direction.

I will be checking this post several times a day so if any of you have any more questions, please let me know.

The lines that are connected to the air cleaner housing are crankcase breather hoses. They should fit tight at the heads and to each other. There should also be one coming off the oil filler neck. Check these hoses. Put clamps on them if you need to make the connections tight.

The gas you are using has no effect on an oil leak.

Many moons ago I had a similar problem. Finally found one of the cylinder head breather tubes was loose in the head casting.

Chck your hoses from the head vents as was mentioned, they could of came off or are old and cracked and oil could be comming from there.

The oil in the air filter is the filter, there should be a level mark some where in the housting. And like any oil if it is dirty it also should be changed.

Had you done an oil change recently, you could have over filled the oil in the crank case, that has been known to happen, after an oil change ? Not all the oil drains when an oil change is done, and these motors take just under 4 quarts when empty, but after it's drained there could still be a 1/2 to as much as a quart still in thew motor, then you add 4 quarts , then you could have as much as 5 quarts in the motor now.
