Some years ago at a HSR West race in Phoenix, Walt Maas was driving the #54 Wayne Baker 914-4 in the Motul 2L series and was in a Saturday warmup session with the over 2L mixed car group and was going faster and faster when he bumped a 2002 BMW sedan going about full speed down the front straight. He spun and went backwards into the pit wall around 95 to 100 MPH and was knocked out. The car was badly damaged and they had to cut the top of the cage off to get Walt out! By that time he was awake but he spent the night in the hospital!

I was talking with him the next day and he noted his wife thought it best he retire and he said he felt that way too. I asked him why not just slow down some and he said "I just can not do that, I have driven as fast I can since I started and don't know how to slow down!" I agreed with him and I don't know if he ever drove again although I saw him at races now and then. He won the SCCA championship at least once I know of, I think in a Datsun 240Z car?
