Another VDO Gauge Question
VDO sells a small fuel gauge (2 1/16) diamater. They have two versions.
10-180 ohms, for VDO senders 226-001, 226-002 301-015 73-10 ohms, for VDO 221-012 301-020 Does anybody know the range for the resistance of the fuel tank sender? Thanks, Karl Ellzey |

Karl,
I don't know the resistance of the sensor but, the Porsche part number is 914 641 802 10.... Maybe VDO can cross reference it. Phil |

The 914 sender uses a different range entirely from the regular aftermarket gauges.
It's something like 13 ohms full and 35 ohms empty. I've got some numbers from when I checked this, but I don't have access to them right now.--DD

will changing the sender to match the gauge render the correct results? or is it hopeless to use any aftermarket fuel gauge?

If you change the sender to match the gauge, it should work fine. After all, the only thing left in the circuit at that point is the wires. You could run new wires if you wanted to, but....

VDO has new senders! These senders are designed for their current gauges. They are probably more accurate as well.
Check out... www.continentalimports.com for a complete listing! Regards, Karl |

When I did my GT dash copy (welding up the radio hole and moving the gas guage that location) all I did was go to our local VW parts joint and buy a 2 1/16 guage off the shelf and plugged it in to the factory wiring. Works like a champ - when its full it reads full, and when the needle even touches the empty line I am walking home. I would pull it to get the part number, but I built an angled holder so it looks "GT" correct. It is a very tight fit and would be a real PITA to pull it out. I will see if I have the box and pass the number on.
