Some Wheel Questions

I just received my Phone Dials in the mail..Yeaaaa

Are all Dials running the same offset/backspacing? I have a '74 with flares and am tring to figure out what amount of spacers is needed?

I don't have tires on the wheels yet. Not sure if I am going to go with 205 or 225.

I hope I didn't buy the wrong offset wheels

PIf some can help I would be very greatful.

Kerry

There are many different types of phone dials, 15" 16" 911 or 951 etc. Also, rims size, 7" 8" etc.

What size did you get? Part #?

I know that you can squeeze 225x50x15 tires onto a 914 if they are 15x7" 951 wheels (see show me your wheels posting)

I have a set of 951 16x7 and 16x8 rims that I am going to try an fit onto my 914. The 16x7 should not be a problem. The 16x8 will require a spacer and longer studs.

I think they came from a 928??

I will be drilling my current hubs and rotors to 5 lug. I hope to do the correct conversion to 5 lug this winter.

I guess pressed in studs is the best.

Thanks

Sorry, you are hosed

The rims you have "I think" are 65mm offset, so you'll need 1.5" spacers to make them similar to mine (or how they should be on a stock fendered car) for flares, you'd need about 3" spacers for it to look right.

65mm is way too much and in fact it might not even fit without hitting the inside fender well or trailing arm.

sell 'em and get the correct offset.

944 phonedials came in two different offsets, 23mm and 52mm

you'd want the 23mm and you'd still need spacers to move the rims out to fill up the flares.

I have 16x7 phonedials on all four corners, offset is 23mm.

Don't give up just yet, at least mount one to see how it looks and see what it might hit.

You should be able to hold one wheel on with one lug bolt to check the fitment. No driving of course and with the car jacked up.

With the wrong offset, you could purchase longer studs and spacers. The trick is that this is not cheap. Good luck.

Does the clearences get better or worse when the car is put back on the ground? It's on stands now.

Thanks

You need 23.3mm offset. Go to the following site and bookmark it.

Hope I got that right! Any with 23.3ET (offset) will work. For phone dials that means EARLY 944, not 928. Can't remember specs on 911 15"ers but the chart will tell you.

Thanks guys.

It's funny how you can go from a big high (package on porch) to a real big LOW (dumb purchase of wrong wheels)

I don't think running 3" of spacers is a good choice.

Oh well it's only money, right

Again thanks.

So if I am reading this thread and the chart from Jim correctly then the phone dials off my father's '97 944 will not fit on my 914? I will be using the front suspension from a '80 911SC. Does that make a difference?

Is the offset information available somewhere else?
The scanned in chart is nearly impossible to read

Thanks

I am sure there are others on this board with more knowledge than me but I have spent a lot of time on the subject. While the chart is hard to read, it does seem to have the answers. People talk about "early" and "late" offset. A careful reading of the chart seems to clarify that. Also note that '78 to '89 911's have different offset front to rear but I think both will fit a 914. I have 4 of the 7 x 16 rear fuchs on my 914/6. Phone dials with the same 23.3 offset will work as well. My 914 has a later 911 suspension so I'm sure your SC front will make no difference. I have used 4 SC 6 x 16 fronts on a '69 911. If using 944 wheels you need early (pre '86) 7 x15 or 16". I'm planning to use 7 x 16 phone dials for track tires on my 914.

Just took another look at the chart focusing on phone dials only.
There are 3 offsets, 52mm, 23mm, and 36mm in 6 & 7 width, 15 & 16 diameter. I am sure 23 will fit. I am sure 52 will not fit and I would not gamble on 36 without an opportunity to test.
I have 205x45x16 Kuhmos on 23mm 7 x 16 fuchs on my 914 and they fit. I would not try any wider tire with stock fenders.
When buying wheels use the chart to get Porsche part numbers and ask seller to look for number on inside of wheel before you buy.

Would this help?

I was wondering if something like this would help. It would not be too hard to make one for each different offset, rim size, tire combination so everyone can get a quick look at what they might be in for when buying stuff in prep for a 5-lug conversion.

Who knows. This is what I got once I upgraded to 5-lug wheels using 914/4 hubs and rotors that were drilled. I went with the economic 5.5X14 with 185/75 (Stock 914/6) wheel combination.

If somone could give me an idea of how the flares look and sizes and all I can do a chart of these that would be a quick visual for needed spacers.

Maybe? Maybe not?
