914-4 Can't get into 5th gear - Suggestions / Help

Hello there,

I just bought a 73 2.0 and I can shift into 5th gear with the clutch in, but when I let the clutch out, it pops out again.

I am thinking of doing the following:
-Replacing shift bushings
-Inspecting the connecting mechanism under the shift boot

I am wondering if this could be a bushing issue or whether I should just replace the transmission.

It shifts into the other 4 gears + R, but the shifting is sloppy with lots of play and I may need a new lockout plate to keep from nicking 2nd.

I have owned a few 914s, so I am aware of the sloppiness in cars with old bushings, but never had one not go into 5th.

Any help/suggestions would be lovely,
Ron

The sloppiness is almost certainly due to shift bushings. At least in part.

The popping out of gear is more likely to be a problem with the internals of the transmission, specifically the dog-teeth and slider for 5th gear and the brake bands.

Dr. Evil has a DVD on 914 transmission rebuilding that can walk you through the process. It's a fairly thorough walk-through. We also have an article on the subject, written by "Red-Beard" back before the Doc started on 914 transmissions. Pelican Technical Article: 901 Synchro Change

You'd waste your money on the dr. evil transmission video. I cant say anything good about his products. The haynes manual alone is enough to guide you on a transmission rebuild. If you need more info, the pelican site has a good write up. It is very simple to work on. However unlike the pelican suggestion, I'd be inclined to remove the tranny, so your not laying on your back as much.

I have done several rebuilds, no fancy tools, and no video required.
