Something Odd Happened Last Night...

First the basics.

71 914-4
2.0
Single Weber
Side Shift Trans
Sealed Halogen Lights
Normal stereo - nothing hi powered... Been installed 5 years
VDO Cyl head temp guage, oil press guage, oil temp guage - installed 10 years ago.
Gel Cel type battery.

Last night, driving around at night looking at the fireworks with the top off....

Alternator light came on (dull red)
Push brake pedal in, Alternator light Bright red, Tach drops to zero.
Turn on turn signal, Alternator light Bright red, Tach drops to zero.

Pull over, check fuses, none blown. Turn ignition switch on, no alternator light, no oil pressure light

Carefully drive home, recheck fuses and connections. Still does same thing.

Grab book, and beer..... Decided might be voltage regulator sticking.

This morning, everything is fine

Any Ideas?

go for a drive with the headlights and radio on bet it does it again. check basic elect connections and grounds. check your charging systems under load, lights, fans, radio.oh how about the alt belt tension. the reason all was fine this am was that your good bat had time to recover.

Check the #8 or #9 fuse. Even if it looks good, remove it and either replace it or clean up the ends. Also clean the "fingers" that hold it. Contact cleaner, and/or a pencil eraser.

Maybe not a total solution, but at least partial.

Checked alt belt, it was fine.

Cleaned up all the fuse connectors under the dash and cleaned the relay board in the engine compartment with plastic safe contact cleaner.

Disconnected battery and dropped the fuse panel...

Found corrosion on the spade lug connectors!

While looking thru the electrical diagram. There is a refererence to part #41 a Diode. Where is that located????? Inside of the harness?

If the diode is missing, that could explain why the tach would die when I put the brakes on.

I'd also recomend that you clean the electrical connections on the battery. I seem to find a lot of electrical problems are from corrosian of both the connections and the wiring itself.
