engine stand question
Will Type IV engines typically bolt up to the common American engine stand? If not, can I buy an adaptor plate? Better yet, has anyone fabricated this hypothetical adaptor plate?

Check out the tech tips on Pelican's webpage. There is one on adapting a standard motor stand to hold Porsche engines.

My 2.0 engine is sitting on a modified "conventional" engine stand at this very moment.
What I did to convert it was to purchase a bench-top type VW/Porsche stand from J.C. Whitney (sorry Wayne/Tom)for about $20 and secure it to the standard V8 type rolling stand. While I would guess that the exact way that the bench-top stand would be attached to the standard stand would depend on the exact configurations of the two items, here's how I did it with mine ---- I bolted a 10" length of 2x6 lumber to the engine mounting plate of the V8 stand, with the edge of the board flush with the top of the plate. Then I lag screwed the base of the bench-top stand (through the front 2 mounting holes) to the 2x6. I secured the back of the bench-top stand to the rear of the V8 stand with a long "U" bolt (the saddle of the "U" wraps around the horizontal engine support tube of the V8 stand). Finally, I used nuts above and below the bench-top mounting base to secure things. I'm sure that I have made this sound far more complicated that it is. It's really pretty intuitive once you get into it. All I can tell you is that it's fast, easy, cheap and works like a charm. Hope this helps. |

I modified the tubular stems that came on my generic engine stand ($49.95 Sam's Club) by grinding a notch deep enough to clear the circular ridge on the back of the case. Then all you have to do is line the stems up with the transmission mounting holes in the case. It requires longer bolts, I stayed metric so I didn't have to keep switching wrenches and I used heavy duty bolts with oversized washers just to be on the safe side. I've used it on type IV's and type I's without a problem. I usually bolt it all up to the case then slip it into the receiver on the stand.
You will have to undo two bolts if you want to split the case, need to be careful then. Now if I could just figure an easy way to lift the whole enchlada up to the receiver... good luck. |
