Good work, Scott.
They do look unworthy of rebuilding, but you've got plety of good parts there. I am presently in the market for rear brake calipers, but parts sales and such should take place on the 914 parts forum, so I won't dicker with you on a price here. But really, lots of good stuff there that you might need if you pursue the dream (nightmare) of 914 ownership. Email me. Ed |

That makes me want to rent a big U-Haul with a tow dolly. Put one 914 inside and tow the other behind. So many great looking parts...

you will soon see how long it takes to part out a car (dismantle, advertise, answer email, collect money, ship). I can't imagine doing two, one is taking me long enough as is!

I am not sure why everyone assumes that they are parts cars. Esp. the silver one. Could be a great project to restore. All depends on rust. If too rusty, great race cars...

the silver one needs new floor plans. The drivers side is about to fall through. I cant get to the orange one yet to get a good look at it. I am still not sure if it has an engine or not.
if I sell them, how much should I be asking?

Do everyone a favor and throw that Progressive carb BACK into the woods, bury it, burn it, do whatever to it so it won't fall onto another motor.
Good parts cars however... I love those backwoods finds ![]() Later, Tom |

is the engine a 2.0 or 1.7/1.8 I cannot tell. if you look hard you can see the Orange tranny laying by it.

Things to check to see if it's a 2.0 914 motor or not:
1) Spark plugs. In the one pic of the engine bay, it sort of looks like the spark plug lead is coming through the engine tin on a vertical piece, not straight up on top of the engine tin. If so, then this is most likely a 2.0 motor. 2) Head studs. 2.0s have three studs holding the intake runner pipes onto the heads. One on each side, and one down in between the pipes. The 1.7s, 1.8s, and the VW Bus 2.0s have four studs--two down in the middle. 3) Heat exchangers. Less of a positive indication, but still a good sign: 1.7/1.8 heat exchangers bend upward a few inches from the muffler flange. The 2.0 ones are flat all the way back. But, the 75-76 exchangers (1.8 and 2.0 both are the same in those years) are also flat. They have a single tube inside of them with a triangular muffler flange, while all of the earlier exchangers have two pipes in each and a trapezoidal muffler flange. 4) Serial number. Look in between the oil filler and the fan shroud--clean the area and get all the hoses and such out of the way. If you find a serial number there, and it starts with "GA", "GB", or "GC", it's a 2.0 914 engine. If it starts with anything else, it's not. Also look on a boss (raised flat area) on the right-rear area of the top of the engine case. 914 engines would start with "W", "EA", "EB", "EC", or "AN". Other VW-badged Type IV motors can start with those, though. None of these are absolute indicators; I know people who have used 2.0 exchangers on 1.7 motors and vice-vera, and 2.0s with 1.8 heads and even one or two 1.7s with 2.0 heads. And you can build any displacement Type IV motor on any Type IV case. But they are pretty good indicators. The cylinder heads are one of the more expensive 2.0-specific parts, so it is pretty rare that someone puts them on a smaller motor. --DD

In the rear view what is the thing that looks like a chrome, tubular push-bar? It looks like it's mounted to the lower part of the bumper and then arches up over the license plate. You can see it very well in the open-trunk view.
Can some of you 'old timers' tell us newbies what that was ever for?--Case...

"Bumper overrider". Mostly for looks, just like the stock bumpers.
Available aftermarket and/or through dealers at the time. Just like the rear-trunk-lid luggage rack and a few other accessories.--DD

VRam1500, That's a bumper overrider to keep them big chebby's from crushing the back on the car when parking by sound. Parts Obsolete has a few for sale.
Looks like a 2.0l in the pics to me from the sparkplugs. Check the engine code like DD said. Lots of good parts except for that progresive carb, yuk! Take the front and rear lens off before they get broken!! Geoff

Hmmm. 'Bumper overrider'. That's interesting. I was thinking that it may have been something like the 'parallel parking equipment' package. Pull the front end into the space, get out, grab the handle, swing the rear end over to the curb. These cars are light, but that's ridiculous! Just kidding, of course!
So it's kinda like a pushbar/brush guard on a Lexus suv.....you have it installed, but it really doesn't do anything. Ah, the times--how they aren't a changin'! --Case...

I think these bar were sort of a fad for their time. IIRC, there was one available for just about every sportscar. Remember that at the time, 'Mericun iron had 200lb. chrome bumpers and could do an XKE nose in w/o out even feeling it.

Good find Scott.
Don't pay too much attention to these West Coasters. Here in the South, we have to start with rot. I have the only daily driven 914 in the Mobile area ( that I know of, anyway) Mine looked worse than that when I started. Some would say it still does!! Drop me a line if you need some help, or want to get rid of anything. Karl P |

his $4k spending allowance would be gone in a second trying to get either of those cars in decent running shape. maybe if he had $25k to work with he could make some progress.
Rsxscott, you should check out the SIX cylinder car brad has for sale! |

you'll also get more money for them by parting them out and you'll learn a lot. I'd do it this way if at all possible. of course there will still be two shells to deal with when it's all over.
