Porsche Crest a new addition to the family...

Hello everyone - I have been lurking for a while, but today I finally purchased my first 914 - a Saturn Yellow 1972 914. I've been looking for a while and finally found one that I liked (minimal rust) and did not cost an arm and a leg. A couple nice bonuses include 5-lug conversion with 911 front suspension, 15" Fuchs, SC brakes (not sure how all that was done yet but the PO claims 914-6 stub axles in the rear...) and a near perfect interior with totally intact door panels (no holes).

This story gets more interesting because I had to drive it almost 200 miles home, and within 3 blocks of my house... drum roll please...my passenger side inside CV joint fell off! I rolled to a stop and fortunately had a friend following who could help out. We ended up recruiting help and pushing it the rest of the way. I have heard this is a common problem and will hopefully have it back together soon.

Does this qualify as my initiation to the 914 community???

Thought you guys might get a laugh out of that.

Here's a pic:

Welcome, It never hurts to replace the CV fasteners. I broke a few during tightening on the CV's on my BMW 2002. Nice score! enjoy.

Thanks a lot for all the compliments. I tried to find a pretty original car but with some desirable "upgrades" that save me the trouble of doing them myself so I can concentrate more on driving. It's got a sideshifter which was one of the big selling points despite being a 72. I never imagined I'd own two Porsches at the same time, much less two 72's... It should be a fun year. I'm looking forward to going to some SoCal events once I get the car back to San Diego.

In the meantime, does anyone know where to get 914 parts locally in the Sacramento, CA area? I need a gasket for the CV joint and the attachment bolts and pins for the halfshaft.

Thanks for the help!

(already on the lookout for chrome foglight grilles)

Porsche Crest Welcome!!

Jeff;

Bring the car to an AutoX at the stadium. We'd love to see it! Unfortunately the next one isn't until March (damn Superbowl!) but the club is probably one of the best places to learn how to drive your car properly. Just get a spare set of wheels or get ready to kiss your street tires goodbye.

That reminds me of how my dad drove home my car, like maybe 40 miles, but.... The clutch cable was broken loose, therefore not much clutch, if we stoped he'd have to turn off the car and put it in first, then turn on the car. the brake pedal stuck, the brakes sucked. The valves were leeking, and smoked everywhere. the lights didnt work. the tires were like 195 55 15's, the suspention was Completely out of allignment. the battery was dying, and it was really low on oil, with bad gas. THAT was the proudest moments in my life, I had bought 3 914's, 2 parts cars, (my car still amazes me with the little amount of rust it has) with all MY money,($950 but hey). Good luck on you teen..
