We never ever see your CC info, that all stays with PayPal.
There's no way i would want the responsibility of having to store someone's bank/money info.

Happy there is a place for us here. Thank you to Pelican for the hospitality. Lurked here every now and then.
Thank you SirAndy and to anyone else working through this issue.

Hello all, it's been a while. I went to check on the site today and it was down, so here I am. Thanks SirAndy (it's been a looooong time) for working hard to get it back up again.

Hard to believe I joined this site over 20 years ago.

bad timing

Been outta the 914 world for 15 years or so. Owned 20+ cars raced and restored them. Used to have 5-6 go to places on the net to try and piece info together, buy sell parts etc. Noticed awhile ago that had changed. Pretty much 1 go to place, and man was it great. Even took a look on there last week as my son was thinking about buying his first one. Bragged to him how great a community this was and how this "one" site would be indispensable for him going forward.
Good news he bought a great 75 1.8 with almost no rust, in great condition for half what it's probably worth. Then Black Sunday happened :( ......

Good luck on your repairs and thanks for putting together such a great resource. Guess I'll have to rely on my memory til then... we are so screwed ... :(

I have had these cars since the 70's before internet. Buy him a 914 Haynes manual. Early Christmas present.

If you're inclined, his name is Jim Butcher. He's got about ... 28-ish novels out? I lose track. He usually has some sample chapters on his website if you're a 'try before you buy' kind of person. :)

Went over to the world and saw the note... sucks but I have faith in you. Typically I’m pretty laxxed with security stuff but lately I’ve been updating stuff to the two-factor authentication.

Can’t wait to get back

I’ve had a lot of 914s starting in the early 80s. I haven’t had one for 15 years, but I still followed 914world because you guys do the most amazing projects and have the best community of “car guys.” Hope you’re back soon!

Hopefully they do routine backups. Curious how they got in? Password hack or got into the root OS some how?

One of the admin accounts was compromised (password hacked, possibly through their phone) which allowed the hackers to gain access to the administrative part of the website.

Luckily, they didn't gain access to the server itself.

Yes, we do have backups, but unfortunately due to the nature of the deletions, it's not as easy as rolling back the latest database backup.
I'm still working my way through restoring and i'm hoping we'll be able to recover with minimal losses.

Worst case scenario right now would mean we'll lose the last two months of posts. I really hope that won't be the case.

WOW, w/o outing the Admin is it too early to confirm the hack was via phone? And If not, is it possible to determine if it was an Apple or Android phone that was the culprit?

Thanks for the update Sir Andy!! Sad that someone would do that to a car site.
Thanks again for supporting and maintaining our addiction.

x98boardwell 11-19-2022 10:45 AM

Thanks for the updates! Hoping she'll be back up and running soon.

SirAndy 11-20-2022 10:52 AM

A quick update on the progress (or lack thereof) but let me first say that i really appreciate all the support from everyone.
914world wouldn't be what it is without y'all.

The Good:
- Almost all topics and posts are still intact
- Only 5 user accounts have been impacted, mine included. I was banned!

The Bad:
- Topics and posts were completely scrambled when the main forums were deleted. Unfortunately unscrambling them is a somewhat manual process that will take more time.

The Ugly:
- There is evidence that suggests this might not have been a random attack
