WTB 1973/74 914/4 1.7 or 2.0
Good condition car with nice, complete interior and top, and clean title. Engine can be damaged, hi-mileage, seized or missing. Transmission can be damaged, hi-mileage or missing. Please pm me if you have what I'm lookin' for! I would prefer original color/straight body; but the car must be rust free including rear trunk and battery tray.

Ok, I'll bite, what is your new project? I am trying to sell a 964 project car and then I get to start on my 914 project. Jim

Jim, as it turns out, there are more 914s in Bakersfield than I thought! I found a '74 1.8 liter 3 miles from my house. It's been sitting since '03, has 98K miles (which appear original), and took about 2 hours yesterday to get rid of the cob/spider webs! My goal was to buy either a '73 or '74, in order to get early bumpers and a side shifter. Success!

Peter - great find. Please post your progress and plans for the 914. I personally do not like black, but will admit when the paint is right they look great. Jim

It's really funny that I've always loved black Porsches, but in the late '70s to early '90s (when my shop took care of the largest number of 914s) black 914s were a rarity (there seemed to be more black '75/76 models than the early bumper cars). I never dared to even hope to find a black one, the world has so many orange, yellow and blue ones, but I never really dared to hope that I would even find a 914 here in Bakersfield.

I was also never a real fan of bumper tits, but at least in 74 they were both on front and rear and of course I like chrome bumpers with the appearance group, but then you are changing the car, not sure what your plan is, I also really like the Porsche Fuchs wheels either the 15 or 16" x 6" fit real nice and lets not forget the passenger side mirror. Please keep us up to date. Jim

Step 1: Remove cobwebs.
Step 2: Remove gas tank (8-years of non-use can do some ugly damage). My car is no exception, and after draining about three gallons of putrid liquid that was once gasoline from the tank, I discovered that the hose bibs in the bottom of the tank were thoroughly rusted in place. It took longer to get them out of the tank than to take the tank out of the car. Light weight and easy access helps, and we managed to get both bibs loose (light damage on one will clean up OK. ![]() ![]() ![]() The tank chamber looks pretty good (zero rust), aside from assorted debris, dead spiders, more cob webs, etc. ![]() ![]() Gas tank has been dropped off at ARS (Automotive Radiator Service) for a good boil-out - hopefully it will survive. Now, if I can find the seals and gaskets to put it back together...anyone out there have a great source for 914 parts that are NLA at the dealer?

Peter - 914world.com if you have not been there go and register. This site has more activity and very helpful 914 nuts who will help you out. Post WTB requesting your needs and I am sure they will respond. Pelican just does not have as much action as this other site. Thanks for the pictures many people will follow and offer input. Is this your first 914? Jim

On a positive, the gas tank came out better than I could imagine, and should have a long service life ahead of it. My wife and I spent about two hours this morning cleaning mouse poop and assorted dirt and unmentionables from the gas tank "well," and the two trunk compartments. I'm confident that there is nothing living in the car now, so after everything is good and dry we're going to push it into the garage. BTW; I used to live off of Borchard in Newbury Park (1998-2002). Used to love going to Stella's for Sunday breakfast!

Peter, I have a '74 parts car here in Porterville. Not sure if you can use anything from it but you are welcome to come look.
