WTB- 1971 ignition column

I know its a looooooooooong shot, but if anyone has an ignition column from a 71 that they are parting out I am in dire need of one. mine ignition switch is busted, and NLA. the one sold that states it fits a 71 does not work. After 71 the column has the wiper switch on the column, so I really dont want to upgrade if I can help it. so please let me know if you have a line on one.

THanks!
Jim

I would really like to know where if you can find out!!!! everywhere I look now , they are selling an empi switch, and it does not work. its for a VW bus I think, and when placed in the ignition column for a 914 ( at least mine) it only turns one click. I have ordered several from different sources, and all are the same

The switches can be fixed many times. it depends what is wrong with it. I repair, restore, rekey, rebuild locks. If you are interested, you can see some of my work here:

My electrical switch, the plastic part has disintergrated. the keyed part, is metal, and working fine.

BTW- i have purchased lock pins from you, and the kit is awesome!

Are you referring to the rectangular Bakelite terminal plug that connects to the car's main wiring harness? Or do you mean the ignition switch that inserts into the back end of the steering lock?

not the plug. the ignition switch that inserts from the bottom of the column and mates up with the metal keyed part of the ignition. Mine has a plastic bottom, and metal top, its cylindrical and straight. the newer models (all but 71) are white plastic and have a bend in them, and do not fit. so I need a replacement from 71. if you have, please let me know!

THanks!

replacement switch

This is what many 914 owners use to replace their original switches. The original VW/Porsche German made switches are NLA, but there are new repop. If your original column switch still had the bullet connectors intact, you would need to remove and re-solder them onto the new switch.

Part number 311-905-865-A

available at VWC-311-905-865-A - IGNITION SWITCH ELECTRICAL HALF ONLY - BEETLE 68-70 / GHIA 68-70 / BUS 68-70 / TYPE 3 68-70

I purchased two of those switches. one from our host, one from ebay. neither works. they fit, but to get it to line up, the switch needs to be turned one click, while the key is in the off position, so when i try to turn the key, it only turns one postiion as the switch is turned all the way and wont go further. perhpas I am doing something wrong, but I took it to a mechanic friend and he agrees, that part will not work.

the 914 keyed part and this new switch are not compatible in my opinion. I wish it worked!

If the after market switches you bought are not working then it could be one or any number of things.
1) The electrical switch and ignition lock are not properly aligned
2) The electrical switch is not properly seated in the steering lock housing
3) Your ignition lock is binding and needs to be serviced
4) Your steering lock housing is damaged
5) Someone has bastardized the ignition assembly and the parts will never work together because they are not compatible (happens more often than you would think).
6) Some or several of the reasons above

I recently had a customer that sent me his 70-71 ignition switch to repair and get keys made. I fixed it and diagnosed the problem. He also needed a new electrical switch as his oem German 914 switch had been mangled by a previous owner. I located a NOS made in Taiwan switch for him and everything turned out fine. It was a repop VW 4 wire style just like the one above, just vintage NOS. I think you may have another problem not just the broken Bakelite portion. I work on Porsche locks. I can take a look at it for you and tell you definitively what is wrong, but I would need to have it in hand. You can see some of my work by following the link. Let me know if you would like to send it in.
