A 16V 3.0L turbo - that's kind of what I have always thought of as the "final frontier" for these cars.

Zero lag, more power than you know what to do with. That's when you start breaking rear axles, transaxles, clutches etc.

Still, fun to dream about, and wait for your boat to come in....

Kudos, AZBanks...

My boat is as they say, the slow boat from China. I've been slowly collecting parts for this build since 2011 and I still have a few to go.

I'm hoping the spec stage 3+ I just bought from our hosts will be able to handle the power.
I've got a Lindsey trans mount and will be adding a trans brace to try to keep everything in one piece.

I've got an 89 AOR LSD trans I want to put in the car but I can't find anyone local to put it back together. I started to do a long 5th gear swap on it when I found that third gear and the pinion gear were chipped. I've got all the replacement parts but can't find a shop who will put it back together for me.
I've got a 944 LSD trans in the car now that I picked up at 20th st auto. It was not marked as an LSD and they sold it to me at a price that leads me to believe that they didn't know. It was a very nice surprise when I got it home and figured it out.

Eric - check out "California Motorsports" on the CA/AZ border.
All they do is Porsche transaxles...around $1000 for labor, plus parts. Highly regarded in the community.

Last contact I had with California Motorsports, he wouldn't build a basket case, he would rebuild a complete trans but not one that has been disassembled. I may have to completely disassemble it(due to the chipped pinion gear) and then reassemble it with the replacement parts and then ship it to him to be rebuilt.
It would be so much easier if I could just ship it as-is and have him assemble it.

I would like to assemble it myself but I don't have the shims, tools, and experience for setting pinion depth and preload, etc.

It wasn't on the slow boat from China, this box was on the boat from Germany. Now to see when the machine shop can get my block and head on the schedule.

Eric,
Would you have any interest in an adjustable cam gear for the 16v?

azbanks 02-11-2020 08:28 AM

Yes, that is something I've thought would be a nice addition to the project.

azbanks 12-02-2020 08:04 PM

WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

I just got on the schedule for the block and head work. I drop the parts off on Jan 1. 2021.

The big question is if I should keep using this thread or start a new one in the 944 Turbo forum.

End of day 2.
It is on jack stands and the splitter and bumper cover are removed.

Nice progress, moving along quickly.

Cool pic from yesterday. These cars look great, even without sheetmetal :)

Day 3

Day 4

The support under the radiator is held in place by two cap head bolts on each end. If those bolts are removed, the support can be moved around a little but can not be removed from the car.

Why would Porsche do this? If it's not removable, why use the bolts, why not make it a completely fixed piece?

A little cutting on the side and the support is removable and the radiator can be easily removed out the bottom. I cut off the remaining tab but didn't take a picture.

This also provides a LOT more room to slide the engine out the front once it is dropped out of the engine compartment.

Day 5 was Christmas so I got nothing done on the car.
Day 6 Was productive but I didn't get any good pictures.

Day 7

The engine is out of the car and it is DIRTY.
Almost 190,000 miles so I guess it's earned a bit of dirty and a lot of oil.

The number 2 spark plug hole is messed up.

Has anyone done a time-sert in an S2 head spark plug hole?
