Radiator fan making noise
Hey guys 1978 924 here. My fan has been making noise recently. It seems to be rattling a little. Any ideas on what I could do to fix it?
Sorry I am new to cars and this is my first Porsche, so I apologize for stupid questions. Is it normal for it to run after the engine is off? It seems to run for quite some time. Like longer than 5 min. I was stupid and dropped the car when changing oil. I ended up damaging the front lower valence and I believe it may have shoved the radiator and fan a little, since they are connected. The part that is bolted to the radiator from the valance actually broke, so I am in the market looking for a new front spoiler. |

Safety first: disconnect the battery negative terminal before doing this, since the fan motor can turn on at any time and is powerful and the fan blades can slice through skin when turning.
After disconnecting the battery, turn the fan blade by hand and see if it is hitting any part of the shroud. You may have moved things around with your mishap. You may have to reposition (as much as you can) the parts hitting until they stop doing so. The fan is designed to operate even when the key is off, to cool the radiator on a hot day. There is a thermoswitch in the radiator which closes a radiator fan relay to operate the fan.

If you haven't already connected with them, the folks at 924Board.org :: Index can probably help you out.

Bearings in fan could be dry or going out. Unplug the fans and remove the fan shroud and fans as one unit (four bolts - easier to drop out than to lift out but you have to remove the batwing)
Spin the fans by hand and see if you can see which one is making the noise. Some all-purpose oil in the oiling hole (on the side of the noisy fan - in the metal casing, hard to find so you may need to remove it from the shroud to oil it) will do wonders if it's just needing lubrication. If not, you can replace the entire unit or just the fan - they're available used on eBay and $$$ from Porsche. Good luck!

Oh just re-read your post and see that the car dropped. Take a look at the bottom part of the fan shroud, if it's cracked or busted you need a new one. There's not a lot of tolerance in there.
