944 Gearbox noise

Hey!
Everytime I go to shift into second, there is a grinding noise, and alot of resistance. If I wait for the RMPs to drop to idle speed, it goes in fine. I assume it is the synchros but I wanted to make sure.

Also, what type of gearbox does the 944 have, and where can I get synchros and sliders for it?

Thanks!

It has an Audi gearbox but I'm not sure if Porsche did anything to it to beef it up any. Its probably synchros but I've heard somewhere that a bad motor mount can cause hard shifting to 2nd gear. I think I heard that. Someone want to confirm that?

The reason why a bad motor mount would cause hard shifting is because the whole transaxle, torque tube, and engine are suspended off the car. Basically, that transaxle has two rubber mounts to the chasis, and to the torque tube. It's extremely easy to move around when the torque tube is disconnected. Motor mounts are much sturdier than transaxle mounts, and a collapsed one would turn the whole assy, to that side. Usually the exaust side goes bad, so the entire engine/torque tube/transaxle assy will turn to the right (viewed from in front of the car, counter-clock).

Now since the shifter linkage is solidly mounted to the transaxle at the end, but uses the (non twisting) chasis as it's pivoting point, it's easy to see that a bad motor mount could indeed make shifting feel messy.

Second gear being to the left from inside the car, I can see how this would be, but I'd think it would affect shifting into all gears, at least to 1st, as well as 2nd...

I hope this clarifies things a bit,
Ahmet

Thanks for your replies! That makes sense. But it only happens into 2nd gear. I can put it into first with out a grinding noise, but when I go into second, it grinds bad. Also, when the engine has been running for a while in a gear (like on a 1/2 hr + freeway drive) when I get off and come to a stop at the traffic light, it will grind while at idle RPMs also.
