89 944 Shifting Problem

Hello,

I bought a 1989 944 back in March, it's the 2.7L 5 speed, and it has been a blast.

However, recently I ran into a problem that I certainly have no clue what it is. I was driving one day and when going into third gear, it didn't engage. After some moving around, it seems what should be 1st gear is a higher gear than when it is in 2nd gear, neutral is now a gear, and reverse only works whenever it feels like it. I have not tried 4th or 5th. I don't believe it is the clutch as it shifts fine still, but the gears are all mixed up in the shift pattern.

Any idea what it could be?

Check the articulating mechanism on the top of the transmission. There are a couple of bolts which can come loose and cause problems with gear selection.

The mechanism can be found by following the large shift rod which originates at the shift knob.

soviettoaster...This is what George is talking about....see picblack rod coming from your shifter ,,,articulating mechanism on top side of tranny. How it will look in Neutral...To compliment George post....to get at it ,remove rear wheel driver side, before crawling in there make sure the car is secure using jacks stands, not much space up there but enough to get at it.Best of luck solving your problemes & let us know if you do so.

So this appears to be the problem, it looks like the articulation mechanism is disconnected from the transmission. Is it just clean and tighten bolt B down on the diagram provided by Ernie 944?

Yes, remove the bolt and clean it up with a steel brush and brake cleaner. Apply blue loctite to threads.

Clean up the arm and the post with brake cleaner. Install the arm onto the post, noting that the bolt hole is opposite the flat part of the post.

Install the bolt, as the bolt is tightening, make sure that the point of the bolt fits into the countersink on the post (rotate the arm back and forth to feel the right place.) Tighten to 21 Nm or 15 ftlbs.
