caliper upgrade
Has anyone found lighter weight rear brake caliper to replace the heavy single piston sliding caliper? I'm not looking for an upgrade in stopping power. The 944 rear caliper is already an upgrade for my car (1974 VW Super Beetle), but I'd love to lose some unsprung weight. I'm not opposed to using some kind of caliper adapters, but I really don't want/need increased stopping power.
My car has vented front rotors with 42mm opposed, 2 piston calipers. They're a near ideal balance on a Super Beetle with 944 rear brakes, so something with the equivalent area as 36mm pistons calipers is what I'm after. I do like the 944 calipers. I had them sandblasted and I rebuilt them, so if I cannot find a light weight alternative, I'll just live with what I have. Thanks Kindest regards H2OSB |

you'd have to find a solid rotor to work, but there are lots of VW/Audi calipers up into the early 2000s that will bolt up to the 944/SB trailing arms. most are 36-38mm.
late 356/very early 911 models IIRC use a solid rotor that is otherwise the correct dims for a steel-arm 944...but often expensive. or you can use a small wilwood caliper with the wagens west adapters. |
