Beautiful indeed, but 0-100 in 6 seconds? DAMN!! That thing is a death trap. I'd still take it though.

That's 6 seconds with less than 80hp mind you.
Now imagine 200+hp from a flat 6, in a sub 1100lbs car! Death trap? Oh yes, no crash safety feautures AT ALL! PS: Incredibly tricky to drive on top! Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

190 hp

190hp, what on a 550 originally?
They had between 70, and 83-85 stock. Only on alcohol could the later 4 cam engines reach 90hp. However, with about 80 hp, they did 0-60 in around 5 sec. Weight was around 450kg, that's in ready to race trim! That's a pretty good little package!!! And yes, with 190 (or more!) hp, it would be one little fast car. You know what, they sell exact replica (from the drawings) of this car's chasis, with fiberglass panels. Only around $8-14k, and dropping a flat 6 can't be too much trouble... THAT would kick some serious butt. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

70 to 80 on a stock 500? The 550 put out 118hp and the four cam engine in the 550A put out 130hp. I don't think they could go 0-60 in the 5's either. The 904 could. It put out 180hp with its four can engine.

They had many different engines in them, and several different versions... The pictured car is a replica of an early one. It does not have an engine that could be found in an original 550, instead a tuned VW.
Early examples of 550s came with 1100 to 1500cc engines, the pictured car has a 2300+cc I believe. The pictured car even weighs more. Early factory cars weighed up to 200-400lbs less than the pictured replica. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
