What mods are needed to get a 944 into the high 12's low 13's

Hey guys. A pretty broad question but what do you think. What mods are needed to get a 944 into the high 12's low 13's? Thanks for your help. I am considering switching to a 86-88 944 and would like to be faster than my Z28.

You mean a 944 Turbo (951) right? A normally aspirated (N/A) 944 is not going to do 12's.

If you want to get a 944 in low 13s high 12s i would reccomend a 944 Turbo. They are easier to get there with only a $2000 in modifications. You can crazy out a 944 NA to go that fast but you would have to supercharge, rebuild the whole motor, stroke it, bore it, port-polish, get new flywheel, carbon-kevlar clutch, supercharger, modified ECU, custom exhaust, cone filter intake or cold air, and weight reduction...lots of money involved...

I think the only way you can get that kind of low times is if you add a NOS system to you 944, but that's not a safe way for you motor. A stock 944 turbo can get a time of 14.2 in a 1/4 mile. Why do you want a low time? http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

I'd venture to guess that my 951 will run mid 12's judging from other quick cars I've driven. I'll try to get to the 1/4 to prove it though before making the claim. Basically you'll need a MAF and turbo. About $2200-3500 depending on who you decide to purchase from.

The 944 wasn't designed for 1/4 mile tracks. It's a race car designed for race tracks. You'll have to dump a buttload of $$ into it .... but if you're going to do it...definitely go with a 951....

1) sell Porsche
2) buy Mustang
3) write "944" on back of Mustang with magic marker.

another way:

go to a parking lot in which the spaces are numbered...

park your 944 between space #12 and space #13.

your 944 will be FIRMLY in the 12-13 area.

3rd ALTERNATIVE:

1. Buy 944.
2. Find cliff.
3. Combine 1. and 2.

to get it to run to what you want...cars only got 140something hp??..lots of weight reductions..proper gearings...blah blah blah..blah blah blah..shoot plenty of juice(no guarantees)

another option is to buy a granny motor. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

or buy a camel..a two hump not one(2 humps is faster)(j/k) http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

Seriously, though, the bottom end is hefty - as big as that chevy. Run 2-stage nitrous or something... You may need to upgrade clutch (centerforce has a really expensive one), the halfshafts (to 930 units), and the tranny (perhaps a getrag 931 unit?), and play with the rear suspension for better traction for launches...

Just throwing out ideas here, don't take this as gospel...

Brad,

Before you seriously consider a purchasing a 944 Turbo (951), go find one and take it on a test drive. Z28s and 951s are two completely different beasts. And both cars shine in completely different aspects of performance.

So now go out and test drive a 944 Turbo and come back and tell us what you think.

if you are looking for quick 1/4 times only, the most cost-effective way to do it would be to get a honda and modify it. 300 hp pushing 2100 lbs makes for a fast car. an ugly, questionable-handling car, but a fast car nonetheless.

I'm sorry fellas. I'm new to the Porsche seen. I meant a turbo. 951 I guess. I know that the Porsche is much more of a cornerer. I love going through corners. But I love going in a straight line also. Thanks for your suggestions and keep em coming. And as far as the Mustang comment goes. I said I wanted something I could make FASTER than my Camaro. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

Solution for 12 to 13"s

Toss drivetrain in dumpster
install v8 and do a back-half job with a ford 9inch..

The point is the 944 is for a track that is composed of more than a straight line. Its a balance between brute performance and the ability to carry speed in a variety of situations. The 944/951 cars have great balance and can do the job any day...

Me thinks you are on this post just to see what the Porsche guys will try to do to match your GM performance... or to catch us dissing your wana-be sports car...what you are doing is trying to mix oil with water

and I you do want to go faster than your current Camaro, try a civic

Scott R 04-16-2001 12:30 PM

Try a Civic if you want good gas milage, and little commuter car. Didin't someone have a hyperlik for a company in Colorado Springs Colorado that made a bolt on supercharger for the 944?

Well if you are talking about a turbo, you can chip it, take your cat out (adds 20-30hp), change your MAF and thigns like that and get some scary amount of hp out of these things

Give the guy a break, he wants a fast straight line 944, but he does appreciate cornering ability. Buy a 944 turbo (or better yet, a turbo S)slap a new turbo on with chips and a MAF sensor and he should be at 13 flat. I want a 930 that will do 11.2 in the quarter, now make fun of me : )

PS I'm serious about the 11.2, hahahaha (evil laughter)

Nothing wrong with drag racing. It is all about who is the better driver and has more horsepower...plain and simple. I think it is a great feeling kicking the **** out of someone on the street when they think you're the one who is going to lose...

Eddie Bello had a 9 second 911 that he used for drag racing...that was before he was arrested. (Oops!)
