Question Coolant reservoir spitting up...??

I'm not a mechanic, so go easy on me...
1988 924S...

A couple of weeks ago my mechanic replaced the radiator, thermostat and fan switch. Now, after the car is driven for longer periods of time, after you shut it off, some coolant spits out of the little tube. It only seems to do it when the car has been hot for longer periods of time. Eventually the coolant is below the minimum line and needs to be refilled, just to spit up again.

I read someone esle's post a couple of weeks ago that said something about changing the cap. So I did. That didn't seem to work.

Suggestions?

The gague peaks at a little over the 3/4 line, then the fans kick on and bring it back down to 1/4.

Cooling system Burping is caused by air in the cooling system. The system needs to be bled. The system was not properly filled and bled after maintenance.

I hope this helps... at least it's not "burping" coolant today....

BTW - the fans are kicking on just UNDER the 3/4 line... my mistake earlier.

I took off the cap and turn on the car. I let it idle while it reached operating temp. Just before the fans kicked on, it burped a lot of air out (and some coolant) sucked in the rest of the coolant in the expansion tank. I immediately poured in more coolant as it sucked it in until I reached the minimum line. It hasn't burped since. Is this an "ok" way to bleed the system?

Thanks

on the 87 944 model you can bleed the system pretty easy. There is a bolt that you loosen on top of the engine, where your upper radiator hose connects to the pipe going into the engine. There is a bolt in the top middle of that pipe. loosen it slightly -you dont need to take it out- and then fill up your resevoir all the way and run the engine until water, and water only comes out of the loosened bolt. Then tighten down the bolt. Let the engine cool and fill the resevoir back to where it is supposed to be.

Hi 951 In addition to bleeding it is a good Idea to jack up the front of the car on jackstands open the heater control valve top up the coolant and start the car let it warm up with the cap on so it builds pressure as it is warming open the bleeder a few times to let out the air after she is warm run the engine for about 2 mins at about 2000 rpm this is to purge the heater core and fill all the open spaces in the block open the bleeder a few more times till no air comes out, make shure that the coolant tank is topped up it is easier for the system to fill if it is more full that at the min level, (also make shure that you use Phosphate free coolant this stuff is orange made by Havoline also known as Dexcool this will let your new radiator lead a happy unclogged life, if you use the other more common coolant this will over a period of time start having particulate coming out of suspension and start to close off the tubes in your radiator).
Anyway after your done bleeding shut the car off and let it cool some (while still on jackstands)then carefully with a hose rinse the old coolant that came out of the bleeder off of the engine, be very careful not to get water into the rear of the head where the speed sensors are as this will rinse into your clutch and foul that and the starter up..... let the car down and go for a ride about 5 miles or so come back and top up the system thats it it should be free of all air pockets......good luck...Stan
