the bottom part that rotates the handle pulling motion down has a busted ear and it can't pivot for the downward motion to unlatch the door. the handle just moves in.

I resemble that remark!
As to the handle; you can buy just the broken part and replace it. Check out eBay. Think this is also an Audi/VW part. I'll check my "stock". Think I might have one of the handles (has the plastic insert on the outside). Don't remember which side.
