Cabin noise reduction options ...

If there were one basic characteristic I would change about my 84, it would be to make the cabin a bit less noisy.

The road slap from the tires and the exhaust noise combine to reduce the comfort level for my old and well used ears ...

With this in mind, I was wondering if anyone here as tried the quietcoat, dynamat or brown bread products?

a little lighter on the accelerator would do the trick.

I have found that my hood pads are gone ( hence the peeling paint on the hood ) I'm sure that would cause noise. Also check the engine / firewall area. I have seen pictures that show padding where mine has since gone.

I personnaly have in the back of my mind that once I take care of the obvious things to always put some sort of padding or insulation in any area that I do work on.
I would love to put some sort of coating on the engine compartment , If I ever have to remove the engine.

Any work on the doors will find them full of padding etc...

A lot of wind noise is from the recessed windshield.

I've found that new tires are much quieter than worn tires.

Another thing to check are the rear bearings. When these are worn they make a constant low rumble.

Anyhoo, I am building a competetion system in my 944, so I am doing it out of necessity, however, I as well find that the road noise is a little much some times. I just removed a large box from my hatch area, and now I can hear my exhaust, jeez, I think it's time for a new muffler.
Anyhoo, I was thinking, if you dynamat/fatmat/brown-bread the interior, you will have to pull the seats, all the carpet, door panels and perhaps even the roof down. It is a lot of work, only do it if you are dedicated to eliminating the noise.

I've found some judiciously placed sticky backed foam in the sunroof (where the deflector makes contact when the hatch is in place) and tangs cuts down a fair bit of rattling in that area.

Thicker under carpeting works well too - I get it from a regular household carpet outlet.

The post 85.1 cars have thicker padding under the carpets. Especially in the back carpet area.

They also have a flush mounted windshield. You can buy the three pieces that spaces the windshield the next time yours needs replaced and make your early 944 like the later 944's. Think you also have to buy two of the thicker support blocks that are at the bottom of the windshield or get them from a wrecker. The wiper arms may be different or the pivots may be a bit longer. I'll have to check the unit I have.

A note on the sunroof; you can take the liner off and put some sound deadening between it and the outer shell.

There is room in the doors for some sound deadening. I would glue it to the inside of the outer door panel. Same with the rear quarter panels.

I have a stupid question about noise. I have noticed a lot of the road noise on my cars sounds like it's either coming underneath the door, or through that panel right at the bottom of the door.
Is this a bad door seal, or is this a problem in the design?

Yep, seems like I'm hearing the road noise through my door panels as well.

I've made a material selection (QuietCoat) and I'll post here to let everyone know how it worked out. I've purchased 3 gallons of the stuff and plan to do the door panels and the 'under the carpet' parts - including the rear wheel wells.

SoCal's comment on older tires being louder than new ones rings true to me as my tires now (they are getting on in life) certainly seem louder than last year.

I found that turning up the volue on the stereo takes most, if not all, of the road noise away

Please, do post where you got your sound-solution at. I'm looking for a way to deaden the sound of the engine in my car. Preferably since there's only about ¼ of an inch of fiber-board insulation.

I've considered rhino liner, but that stuff aint easy to come by. and dynamat can get quite heavy in needed quantities.

Oh, o.k. The term "system" is usually linked to a soiund system where I come from. I can't listen to the radio or stereo in my 944, the car has so much bass, that it kills all of the mids and lows, so I just listen to music at redlights and drivethroughs.
I'd suspect that the huge low end note generated by the exhaust is musical to some people me included, I like the cars sounds, the trans, engine whine, exhaust, it's all pretty cool.

Lol turn it up, well, that still doesn't help on the judging when everything on my car rattles, they frown on that.

Anyhoo, I am curious about just how much dynamat/brown bread weighs, I do not wish to slow my car down any further.

I didn't think about that. I scraped mine off because it was crumbling, I guess I should buy some new stuff...
