Hi there,
I need your opinions about the light accident that happened to me today. I avoided a car that litterally turned on my lane and blocked me, so I blocked all four wheels, the rear end of the car sliped and my rear passenger's wheel hit the sidewalk going at 40 mph. The wheel has minor scratch damages but I did some tests to evaluate the possible mechanical damage: my transmission works fine at any speed in any gear, my bearing doesn't do any noise and at 70-80 mph, the rear end of the car doesn't shake at all, meaning that my wheel is fine. What do you think about it? Is there anything possibly damaged? Thanks alot guys!!! And sorry for my bad english Yan |

Well, the accident was obviously somebody elses fault. You need to contact your insurance company and let them handle it. In other words, take it to a qualified mechanic and let the party at fault pay for it. Providing you have the insurance information from the driver at fault.

It couldn't hurt to jack the rear wheels up (supported securely with jack stands, of course), start the motor, put it in gear and let the rear wheels rotate. Then you'll be able to see if the wheel or axle is bent. I saw a 968 Cabrio driving down the road the other day with a wheel that was wobbling horribly. I motioned him to stop, and he said he felt no vibration at all.
I hope your car is okay, but checking it will give you peace of mind. --Doug |

Doug: good new! I did the recommended test and everything is fine, the wheel is not bent at all. Does it mean that the impact has been minor enough to protect the other componements (suspension, transmission...)?
Thanks again Yan |

Ho and by the way, the wheels in question are Forged Alloy 16" Fuchs, wow those are solid ones!

Hey Yan, The previous owner of my 944 did the same thing and when I bought the car he didn't tell me or didn't know, but anyway I went to get it aligned and the rear control arm was bent very slightly and the car tracked a little side ways. I never knew or felt the control arm was bent. So in short words...get it checked at your alignment shop. Good luck

Sounds like you got lucky. I would have the rear alignment checked though - then if there is anything wrong, you can claim it on your insureance as road hazard/comprehensive which doesn't reflect on your "claims"
