Post Boost troubles FIXED !!!

Today I removed the Autothority chips in my 86 951 and replaced the stock units. Fading boost problem solved. Appearantly the banjo bolt was no replaced/modified and this created the trouble. The Autothority chips are fine (checked them in a modified car)

Thanks for all the input to the problem!

BTW - I have a set of Autothority chips for sale or trade. They will need a banjo bolt modification. LMK

Don

Why don't you keep the chips, and instead of doing the banjo bolt, get a Lindsey wastegate and adjustable boost controller? That would boost more reliably than the modified banjo bolt, and you'd have power on tap

I am going to use the Huntley MAS kit that comes with chips etc.

Chips are too expensive for these 951's! I thought if someone needed a set cheap or wanted to trade something, I would be game!

Thanks Viprklr, I think you may have solved my problem as well. The PO put in the autothority chips and I don't know if he did the banjo bolt mod. How can I tell? If he hasn't done it, what do I need to do it myself? TIA.

I would really like to trade the chips for a strut tower brace... hmmmmmmm

Or about $100.00 They are less than a month old and most of the pins still attached. Just kidding about the pins.

minhpho, if you have the banjo bolt mod the boost gauge will peg 2 bar (1 bar boost), if not you'll see about 1.8 (.8 bar boost).

To do it yourself you need to buy the jetted banjo bolt. I think all you need is a socket set...maybe a torque wrench. The PO did the banjo bolt mod on my car.

Thanks for the reply. So if I decide to install an aftermarket wastegate and boost controller, the banjo bolt mod isn't necessary right? Thanks again.

The banjo bolts, with restrictor jet, comes with the APE Stage II chips. It slows the air to the wastegate. The stock wastegate is crap for performance but a good safety factor for people who try to add boost without learning how to do it properly. It has leakage built into it...as posted here many times. The stock boost level for a 951, factory setting was about 10psi.

Info:
Stage II chips w/banjo bolt from APE: Great first upgrade; wrong banjo bolt, computer sees a slight overboost,

IF you have Stage II chips, then buy the LBE, put the stock banjo bolt back in.

If you buy an aftermarket wastegate and manual controller, depending on what you have, LBE or jetted banjo bolt must go. Also with a manual boost controller, you will get rid of the cycling valve.

Goku

The chips for an 86-87 will not work for an 88, even non-S because that year they changed processors. I think I'm right but someone with a bit more experience may be better help. That may also be based on certain VIN numbers but I think that year(88)went to a 32-bit processor, previous years were 24-bit.? I heard that there was also an extra expansion slot for future upgrade maybe,,,,hmmm wonder what that may have been.
