Engine just blew
Well i was driving on the highway with 5 bar oil pressure then BAM right down to 0 then back up to 3 then down to 2 i drove it for another 1/4 mile when it got really loud i shut it off and cruised to the side of the road and called AAA. I have no oil leaks and im full on oil. The car sounded like a diesel after that. It was still running but running rough. I think i spun the good ol #2 rod bearing. What do you guys think?
I figure ill drain the oil first then take off the cam cover and oilpan and see whats up. Its rebuild time! I guess this is a good time to build the engine up a little too.

I suppose from what you say, it sounds like a #2 bearing. It's strange it would fail when just driving on the highway. Usually they fail in hard cornering at high revs. That is, unless the car has seen a lot of hard driving, and the bearing was already badly worn from that.
If you have very little oil pressure, and it's knocking like a diesel, then definately pull it apart to see what's up. Check out the oil (like you said), and if it's still good, then perhaps it is something else, but if the bearing spun, you should have some metal shards.

Sorry to hear that Cooler.
I don't know jack about the lower end. If that is your problem I am looking forward to learning through your rebuild.

Its weird because the PO had a totally new short block put in 100k ago. I wouldnt think it would go so fast.
Ok from reading old posts it looks like a rod bearing ...the post said that there might not be engine damage. If i find metal shards im screwed but if not then ill have to do the rod beaings(already have a set and oil pan gasket...im glad i have these on hand) and inspect the crank for damage. If i do have metal shards then the engine has the come out and be totally cleaned. Im hoping for the best ..im going to drain the oil now.

Take the oil filter off and cut it open; that will be the real picture.
If you drove it with a rod bearing gone, it's going to have to come apart. The crank and rod will be damaged. .

Ok, I sifted through all the oil and i STRUCK GOLD!!... no but really there was tiny specks of gold bearing material. I checked the camshaft bearings and they are fine so i bet its the #2 rod bearing. I also stuck my fingers in the oil pan and felt around and there was all the minituare flecks of metal in there. And when i drained the oil out of the drain pan there was a bunch in there too ...nothing big though. Just specks of gold. Worst case scenario my crank is scored???? Ill start taking off the suspention tonight or tomorrow night and get that pan off.
Ok heres the ifs and thens. -If my crank is scored then how do I get it out? -If my crank isnt scored all I need to do is just put the bearings in and im done? -anything else?? Wheres the crank bolt at ae?

The dieseling sound is the giveaway... you spun a rod. You will be better off dropping the engine all the way out and rebuild it on a stand. Its almost a given that your crank will need some attention.
I'm not sure what you have in mind for building up your engine, unless you are planning on oversized pistons, some head work and cams, and none of that will make much of a difference in a street car, IMO. You typically wind up robbing from low end and midrange torque for high rpm hp when you do those sorts of mods, which is fine for a race car. You also typically shorten your engine life by doing those sorts of things. A freshened up engine that is properly tuned will probably feel a lot more powerful than your old one did, anyway. But thats just my opinion, based on how I would use a car... if you want to mod the thing, go for it and let us know how it works out. ![]() As for cost, it really depends on what you find when you get in there. If you are doing the work yourself, I would ballpark a minimum of $2200 or so for parts and machine work (hopefully just the crank and a head job). Yes, I know that probably sounds high, but I bet you spend at least that much. Regards,

Ok, im going to keep it stock. Really 2k? Im sure the engine rebuild kit is around 800 and to get the crank and and a head job would be like 600. I might as well get my valve train done too. I got them chattering lifters.

Unfortunately, yeah... after you figure in new rollers, seals, water pump, belts, add in a few replacement sensors to replace the old crusty ones (you'll be amazed at what that can do for your engine, by the way), money for sealants and whatnot... it adds up a bit too quickly. I would suggest new bolts and hardware as well, but thats just me...
The good news is that once you are done, it should last a good long time. Regards,

Yo man build it, You dont have to go crazy just throw a ace in the bag. Do some light head work (mild port and polish 3 angle valve job), get the rotating assembley balanced and lightened and the crank machined to a razor edge to cut threw the oil better, Maybe even throw in a lightened flywheel and maybe some mild street cams. It would be a sweet beast after some work like that and if done right it wont hurt anything and its not so extreme so it can still be a daily driver and still have low end HP. Think about it your only gonna have a chance like this Once. I hope

oh and dont start red lining it after driving it for 20miles like some other guy on another forum was doing... hehe
funny story i just have to share... a guy on the rx7 board just rebuilt his motor, drove it for 20 miles, then put it on the dyno at 10 lbs of boost under full throtle and wondered why his engine blew up.

Isn't there a cross-drilling trick that can be done on the crank to prevent future bearing-spinning episodes? May want to search the threads on that.

The hell with the rebuild, Just buy a used engine for $1500 or so. I had a con-rod knock and I did rod and main bearings change on my 944. Almost everything from the clutch to the oil pump had to come out! Got 574? lol! I had to use over size bearings so the crank had to be resurface. This job suck!!
