intermittent wipers NOT intermittent!

Ok I've changed the intermittent wiper relay, and cleaned the grounds to the wiper motor, and still I have no intermittant wipers. I have low speed and high speed, but the wipers don't part when turned off. anyone got any suggestions? (PLEASE DON"T TELL ME NOT TO DRIVE IN THE RAIN!) Funny thing is this happened gradually, where it sometimes worked, and sometimes not.

The actual switch on the lever could be broken.

If your wipers slowly started to have problems such as not parking in the correct location AND you haven't mucked with them; you need to open up the gear cover and clean the contacts.

Speed selection is a function of the column mounted selector switch. If you are missing a speed then the column switch is bad.

As to intermintent; the reostat in the thumb wheel can be dirty or burned out. This could also be a column switch problem.

As a side note: The early 944's have two speeds and a single preset intermintent timing. The later 944's have three speeds and a variable intermintent setable through the dash mounted thumb wheel. I've been able to use a three speed gear motor in an early 944 with a bit of modification. Sure wish I could figure out the variable intermintent.

Hugh,

If I have an Early 944 and I have replaced the motor twice (autozone refurb) and still have very very slow operation and NO intermittent, then The consol arm switch is FUBAR correct ???

initially, no operation- broken from PO. Then replaced once(autozone)- slow operation, replaced again ( return to autozone ) and faster operation, but still slow.

Luckily here in SoCal we don't need them as often, so they are out of mind. However El Nino could show his ugly face.

Don

(edit) BTW, I have WD-40'd the linkage many times

I have the same problem, although by pulling the time delay relay now I just have high/low speed and they don't park.
So do you think all I need is a new relay?

Early 944 wipers: Parking can be over ridden from a bad relay. The relay is the interface between the wipers and the intermittent more than the off and park function.

The parking function is primarily a part of the circular tracks and contacts that are under the large round gear cover on the motor and the column switch. So IF a relay is bad such as the points are arced closed then it can continually power the intermittent circuit raising heck with trying to park the wipers.

Slow wipers: This is a linkage problem. Primarily the main pivots. You have to take the whole assembly apart, clean and polish the pivots, re grease them and put the whole thing back together. I've also seen early gear motors that have been swamped from the front tray area not draining properly. This will rust up the ball bearing at the worm drive end of the motor. Doesn't help the bushings either.

If you have replace the stock wiper arms with "stronger" arms you may have too much resistance at the wiper blade. Bend the arms up where they "latch" over center and time their rotation. Put the wipers back on the glass, run a water hose on it and time them again.

Ok so let me get all this straight. Clean the contacts at the motor, replace the switch at the column. (by the way could this also have something to do with my signals not cancelling?) clean and lube the linkage, and don't drive in the rain. (I live on Long Island in New York, this would leave me 8.5 days this summer to drive.) By the way I have an 86 with high, low, and intermittant on the stalk, with no variable.

On an 86, the variable knob is on the right of the steering wheel, beside the rear defrost switch.
Sounds like that may be your problem, but SoCal really knows more about this than the rest of us.

scottmandue, yes, if you replace your wiper relay your wipers will both park and intermittant. I had the same prob with mine.

Sounds like it's time to replace both of the switches. Seems like when one goes so does the other. These things snap together before you put them on the column.

Hey, why go to all the trouble? Mine start working fine when the temperature outside goes above 95 degrees. Try wrapping a heating pad around your steering column, the wiper motor and around the relay box. If you can find a really long extension cord your problems should be over!

You're going to have to wait awhile for a response. SCD passed away years ago. RIP
