Exhaust manifold and turbo
Well, i'm in the final process of taking out my 951 engine. Pretty smooth overall... I was always a bit frightened about the nuts that hold the exhaust manifold to the head, yep, the rusty ones. Well, i just put on my 13mm socket and tried it, expecting to be all stuck and all they just came off. Should be a bit careful, i only took two off so far, but that took no effort at all. Can it be that my exhaust manifold has just been loose all those years??
Also: i've been trying to find out if the turbo is connected to the block in any way. It does seem it's somehow connected to the block, but i don't see a bolt or anything. It would be nice to be sure EVERYTHING is disconnected before i drop the engine out ![]() Any tips on the above would, as always, be welcome |

Man..just think..you could have been having boost creep all those years youve owned the car

Well, no kidding, it really seems as if the nuts are pretty loose. Haven't looked up the torque specs yet, but i can't find any traces of leaking gasses or anything... well, it'll be rebuild and resealed all round, so no big problem.

Uhmmm the exhaust nuts are torqued to 20NM.... Normally people end up pulling the studs..... so consider yourself lucky.
You have 2 bolts holding the turbo........ Accesible from underneath. NOT FUN. If you are dropping the engine leave the turbo on if you can.... otherwise remove the AC/Alternator and you should be able to see the 2 allen bolts. The turbo is held by the motor mount ...

Thanks ae, i'll look that up. I guess removing the exhaust allway around the enigne is better anyway. At least the cross pipe should be removed and i think that involves disconnecting it at the turbo. And while the engine is still in the car i think i'll pop off the exhaust manifold as well, as it goes pretty smooth.
