Hi folks...another question from a 944 newbie...if I look down my windshield, I can see the car's battery...should there be weatherstripping/something other there? Also, I ordered a "battery mat" to put under my new battery...is it worthwhile or will it just absorb rain water and just promote rust?...thx...

There is a stock battery cover. Doesn't fit after market batteries so it gets tossed. Best to use a good spray on the terminals to protect them.
A battery matt will not let the battery lock into the retaining brackets. That is IF you still have brackets. You need to remove the battery, wire brush the area to find the leak and then seal it. There are a few after market epoxy like body sealers. Have to search this forum for the info.

Naw! What ever that red tinted stuff is. Reminds me I need to get some also. I have a cover but the terminals still oxidize. Should keep a plastic cover over the positive as this can make big sparks if/when the hood hits it.

OK Obi-wan and all...I replaced the battery a week ago and in these mild Maryland winters (above freezing during the day but below freezing at night), the battery wouldn't turn the car over yesterday...I charged it and it turned right over...anything to be concerned about or does the 944 just require high amps to start?

No.. The engine does not take a lot to turn it over. (relatively small engine; not like a big Detroit V8) You may have a charging problem or a current drain.

It's the grounds. The circuit to the starter is through the ground wire, then through the bolt in the fire wall, from the bolt to the the bell housing then to the starter.
Clean the connection points for the ground wire at the fire wall -- both sides -- and at the points on the bell housing. If you really want to do things right you might want to replace the ground wires with some of IceSharks. Larger wire finer strands. There can also be a problem with the positive cable. Tends to corrode at the battery. If you have an after market connector that clamps the large cable you should replace it with the stock positive cable as it has the proper mounting for the large red wires that feeds 12 volts to the rest of the car. Another trick to get better head lights is a 10 gauge ground wire from the engine to the grounding lugs on the frames just behind each of the head light buckets. A good set of H4's and halogen bulbs is a good idea. Don't need really bright high's as the pattern of a good H4 lens more than makes up for the wattage.

I also second the charging circuit thing. See if you have a bit over 14 volts at the battery with the engine at about 2,000 RPM.
If cleaing the wires to/from the battery don't help then start thinking rebuilt alternator. In fact it wouldn't hurt to referbish this part of the electrical on a 23 year old car.
